Yippy! They're here! 8-]

I love them all! This is so much fun -- it's like Christmas. Thank you
Sharen for doing all the work.

And no thanx to the mail person who worked very hard to bend and stuff the
envelop into my box rather than get out of the truck and walk it to the
door. The Muse of woodcut saved the prints from any lasting damage. Else
I'd be laying in wait for the mail person tomorrow!

So beautiful. Thanx you everyone. 8-]

Ellen

Use the burnt plate oil. It won't rot your paper or discolor you ink. It
comes in many grades. Choose a light one. You can also use tint base
extender which is also sold at Graphic Chemical. This has a softer body than
the ink, but you can also use them together.

Lori,
Graphic Chem. sells a wonderful gel medium for oil based pigments.
I've forgotten the name, but it is great at getting wonderful
transparency. Ask them for the gel reducer stuff, they will know what
you mean :-)

Cheers!

I fear that adding _only_ the various grades of oil mentioned you will get
very tacky and loose ink. Also, the oils will eventually make your
ink...oily! Check the back of your paper for blotches of oil traveling
around.

Transparent medium is meant for that purpose, to add transparency while
retaining proper tack. Gel medium is designed to reduce tack, adding too
much of this will make your ink never ever dry. It's like a petroleum jelly
in consistency.
I usually go with a mixture of transparent base and one of the oils and then
correct the tack with the gel medium. In any case, make sure you add a
couple of drops of drier, as all the additives will make your ink stay wet
for a long time.

Also in all cases make sure you mix and mix and mix and mix and mix very
well or you will get a blotchy appearance to your inks, especially the big
flat areas.

Hope this helps!
Maria

Hi Lori,

I use burnt plate oil #3, and miracle gel with my ink. I dont' remember
the how or why I came to use this combination, but it gives me very nice
transparent inks.

I use Daniel Smith oil based inks. I am sure if you used Graphic
Chemical's version of miracle gel it would work the same with their inks.

Are you going to do the Christmas sale at the Waterloo Center for the Arts
this year? I haven't seen your work for a while and would love to see what
you are doing these days.

I do a lot with transparancy in my prints. I use this transparent block
printing medium that I pick up at Dick Blick. It comes in a tube and is some
brand that I have never heard of before called Daler Rowney Georgian. The
consistancy is perfect and I love the results. I originally got it to print
using oil paints (ewww) back when I first started messing around with block
printing and kept using it once I got into the good inks.

I have had good transparency colors by using Tint Base (graphic chemical or
handschy ink co.). I believe burnt plate oil will generally just change the
viscosity of your ink.
Try it,

Daler Rowney are a UK company (I think!) which may be why they're not so
well known over there. The product link is here:

There are some links there too for finding stockists if yer stuck.

Subject: [Baren 31660] OT: a few phrases?
Send Message: To this poster

Hi all,

If anyone on the list speaks Italian, can I ask for help with a couple
of words? Our phrasebook doesn't cover printmaking! I'd like to know the
Italian for:

linocut
woodcut
wood engraving
relief printing

It's just in case, as we're off to Florence for a week later this month
and 'twould be good to ask around for prints, galleries, artists etc...
I guess that prints are likely to be way out of our price range, but you
never know :-)

Thanks!

David
