Buy the all shina, then you can avoid the tool damaging mahogany. It is easy to carve but does pop off in tiny places if you work with fine lines and your tools are not wickedly sharp.

I am on day two of the Richard Steiner workshop that followed back to back with the summit. He has developed a new way to carve a straight line that is amazing...using an untraditional tool. I will try to get photos of it to post on the blog. We are using all shina to carve so if my block is not too hidiously carved I will post it as well. I am a fairly decent printer but have always had trouble carving. I am now using the flat chisel about 6mm that is beveled on one side, pushing it away from me on the outside of the line. Beveled side out and flat side to the line. Pushing the knife (chisel) with my right hand and guiding it with my left thumb or finger...it is amazing control. The problem I have alwasy had with the toh is pulling it toward me...I somehow have no control. This new way of carving has made a huge difference....and I can do fairly small lines with it. If your chisel is rounded, like most bull nosed chisels are, it will not work. It needs to be flat with
sharp corners to work in this manner. I was pretty excited about this as most of my blocks are carved like a 2 year old did them....so there is hope for us all. I am going to try to use the toh in this manner as well, but do see that it will be harder to use as one would almost have to hold it at a very odd angle to push it away...I will do some experimenting.
Best to all,
Barbara

Barens and Barenettes all,

I'm having an exhibition next month toward which I have been working for
the last two years. "Congress of Oddities: James G. Mundie's Prodigies"
will appear at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts and will
feature around thirty of my portraits of historical sideshow performers.
It's all coming together, but I still have several late nights ahead of
me (wheeee!).

[press release is here:

If you'd like a copy of the promo materials for this show (exhibition
postcard and a nifty new pamphlet), please ping me offlist with your
snail mail address and I'll pop them in the post for you.

Jim

Hi April, The Summit was a lot of fun. Georga was here and we talked about
your coming to LA to do a workshop. What month would work for you and how
many people do you need? Do you still have a daytime job for money, or are
you trying to make it on woodcuts? Met Richard Steiner - what a cutie! I'm
in Portland waiting for my daughter Midge to come in this evening and then
some of us finish the Summit at a restaurant called McMenamins - historical
place. Talk to you soon. Fondly, Bea

[Baren] Daily DigestHI
since we are on the rust conversation
I just got some print drying racks(metal, spring loaded, flip up type) and like everything in Hawaii has rust. I was thiking 'Jasco" (I think that's the name, takes away rust, car guys use it... then spray paint) It's heavy and about 5 ft tall with about 25 racks. any other rust removal ideas ?
