Hey all you Summiteers, like Mary Green I remember that fun from
Kansas City, so I know you are enthralled right now. Keep the
reports coming for all of us waiting at our patient computers. We
want to hear all about what you are learning from each other. It's
probably not easy to do that while you are in the middle of it all,
but at some point we'll get to see some more of your photos up on the
blog. The gallery show looks good, by the way!

ps: Want to know why my roosters are so late. It's the envelopes!
Everything is ready to go, except now I must make envelopes because
nowhere at the stores nor online could I find a size that would
work. If there's one thing I don't enjoy, it's making envelopes.
I've done it other years for other "year-of-the..." postcards, and
now it's like the worst punishment to make those. Ha.
Hi, Gayle and everyone else...
We are having a wonderful time and I've taken a gazillion photos... however, since it is a brand-new camera, I won't be downloading until I'm home on the 24th. So expect a lot (and I mean a lot) of photos on the 25th.
For me, I'm sitting next to Terry and Charles... and Barbara Patera has had our table in stitches with her wonderfully wicked, witty sense of humor. Charles (Morgan) is a treat to know. We all got a fabulous demo of his foliograph technique, gobsmacking us all with the beauty of bugs and feathers. And we finally have a sense of how to correctly do those solar plates from Barbara Mason. She makes it look easy; I hope it's true because it's just one more technique I want to add to my growing list of 'what kind of printmaker am I'.
And best of all, I have finally cut a woodblock, moving me up in Baren status (I hope) from 'just a linocutter' to a woodblock cutter!!! Yeah!!! Dave Bull would be proud!!!

Yep! The fun never ends! Today we are working on our blocks, some are
carving, some are printing, and some are still staring at the ceiling
wondering which idea to pursue. We have to work fast because we leave
here at 11:30 to make our way through the wilderness to the Portland
Art Museum where we will visit the Gilkey Print Center and see the
Rustling Grasses exhibition and have a docent tour. (We'll see if she
knows what she's talking about and if she misspeaks, man! will she hear
about it. ) Plus also, on the agenda is a visit to Art Media, just in
case anyone has some money left over after the visit to McClains, and
then down to Print Arts Northwest and some other galleries, and
eventually dinner - someplace. Then, if we have enough energy we will
stop at North Bank Gallery on our way home and see the famous
Barenforum.org exhibition.
You can see by this that we are living the wild life and loving every
moment of it!
Wish you were here,
Sharri
To all Summiteers,
Oh, yes, how I wish I was there. Dang! So close, but so far!
The show at the museum is great. That docent better brush up on her
printmaking!
Enjoy our town here in the Pacific Northwest, the Galleries and all have so
much to offer.
I am looking forward to many stories and good times.
Welcome and Happy Summitting!

One of my favorite places to shop for clear bags for my matted prints and
envelopes for special mailings:

Ditto for clearbags.com. I even exhibited prints in those bags with
pushpins, in glass showcases. That was across the street from the Museum of Modern
Art NYC. There, an artist was hanging the same way, a validation. Maria's
Baren Puzzle was also being shown at that time, to very good comments of the
viewers.
My eyes are teary because of missing the Summit II People. Although I am
drinking wine as they are doing, it doesn't help, even with the additives
of paste and all the other recommendations. I'll try it straight and combined
with the wild life in my little bubble.
Thank you --I am enjoying your comments and pictures . Have fun and get to
know everybody!

Well, I find that red wine goes well with rice paste...and cheese. White
wine goes well with wheat paste...and cheese.
I have never tried myself straight, rice paste, wild life and bubbles, but
it sounds like it could be a really interesting dish...with cheese, of
course.
Maybe I'll make a print of that (just wanted to insert some printmaking
content).
I love it that the summit folk are having so much fun!!! I hate it that I'm
not there this time!
Carry on, and yes! Thank you for your comments and pictures (to come).
Please try to have a bit more fun.

Hi All (well those left from the Summit...),
I have a question about mica flakes, I just got some and have never used them before. I thought they would make a nice addition to butterfly wings (it's a print floating in my brain) BUT what is the best way to apply them? One book I looked at had three different suggestions - 1) mix in the pigment while printing, 2) make a stencil, brush on mica mixed in paste or glue, 3) print a block as usual, then do a second printing with paste and then sprinkle the mica.
Any thoughts on what are good and bad points of either process? For example: the first seems easiest but will the mica be as sparkly?
Thanks,
Lee.
Hi everybody,
I (finally, with Maria's help) got some pictures up on the Baren blog.
Go look!
Will take more tomorrow & upload them. The 2nd time should be easier!

Hi Maria. Just today I read you were mailing out the blocks. I've been
out of touch for the last 10 days. My mail came late this afternoon, and
lo and behold, there was a beautiful piece of cherry.
Thanks. Now to get to work.

Maria,
Great piece of cherry has arrived!
I for one am sad that you of all people could not make it to the summit - I
know your reports would have been wonderful to read, but then I am enjoying
the other voices and looking forward to seeing the pictures yet to be
uploaded.
May your doggy get well soon,
yours faithfully,
