David,

I would never recommend Setswell for thinning an ink - better to use a
Gel medium. Graphic makes a very good one. It will think your ink
properly and give you a wonderful transparent hue. It is similar to
using burnt plate oil, but much nicer! As far as clean up goes, if
you're working with oil based inks you can clean up with vegetable oil
and rubbing alcohol nearly as fast as with soap and water for the water
based inks. It has been my experience that the oil based inks are
still richer in color than the water based inks. Maybe its the vehicle
that keeps the pigment more transparent: a comparison would be
transparent watercolor (vehicle is gum arabic) or gouache or casein
(vehicle is a milk product). Happy printing! You will learn what
works for you by experimentation, which is where all the fun is to be
found! What a great coincidence!

Cheers,
Sharri

PS - if its transparency you are after, you can also get the company's
tint base and add color to it. I still prefer the gel medium....., but
it depends on how transparent you are going for. Maria has good advice
for lightening hues value; use the contrasting color on the color wheel
for darkening a tint, rather than adding black.

Hi Barbara,
I am still working on my dog print. I am trying to use Akua colors and found the phthalo blue too dark a shade. From your last email you mentioned that it is not a good idea to use water to dilute the color.. Perhaps another shade of blue would be better. Do you prefer the akua colors to using dry pigments? How do they differ? As far as getting dry pigments have you used the pigments from the baren mall?

I am looking forward to the summit.
Thank you,
Anna Huskey

I work with oily inks mostly but also playing around with water-based inks
from Daniel Smith and Graphic Chemical.
I bought some extender and tint them with pure Akua pigments as well, kind
of fun and reminds me of my job as a color-matcher in the automotive
industry, long long ago.

Anyhow, after working with oily inks, I find that the water-cousins don't
have as long "slab life", especially when our humidity dips below 5% or so.
Since I work mainly with custom mixes, I find this rather annoying and admit
mostly because I'm used to the oily stuff. However I am rather in love with
the process of cleaning up solely with vinegar-based Windex.

So my question(s):
Is there a way to extend the life of these inks after they have been rolled
out on the slab?
In addition to the transparent mediums for each brand, are there any
universal extenders that will allow for longer working time?
Are there any other additives that will alter the inks for a variety of
effects?

Any suggestions or crazy ideas are all appreciated,

TIA Maria

Please does anyone have any suggestions for removing the bend from a
lino block that got wet?

Many thanks,

have you tried heat? the blocks I've used get very soft when heated with a hair dryer, that might help flex it back into shape...

Anna,
I haven't really really used it for moku hanga with brushes, just to roll on. Thin it with transparent base, that is ink with no pigment in it. I will help you at the summit!

I'd put it between some damp cloths and put some heavy pressure on it for a few days.

Congratulations on the press coverage Sharri! I wish I could join everyone
at the summit, but I will be visiting my daughter just a bit north of Portland
in Bremerton.

I hope some of you bloogers will keep the rest of us apprised on what's
going on.

Enjoy the week and the fun!
