I have been experiencing difficulty posting again, seems that the server
thinks I am a spammer for some reason. Hope this makes it thorough.

I am afraid that I have been 'lurking' again for the past few months, as it
has been incredibly busy in my 'real life', and printmaking has had to take a
second to my primary income. Many on here know that I work as a Merchant
Marine officer, and spend several weeks at a time 'at sea'. This kind of cuts
into my printmaking time a bit. I had to drop the last exchange because I wasn't
going to be able to print something that was of suitable quality to
participate in an exchange at the level that Baren's are on... Broke my heart, but I
made sure that I did it in PLENTY of time to let someone else take my slot.

I wanted to 'check in', though, since I am in the next exchange, and didn't
want anyone to get nervous about my participation! The theme is great- just
happens to be right along the lines of some of my current work, so I am really
looking forward to it.

Also, Thanks to some encouragement from other artists out there, including
Mike Lyons' recent press project, I have decided to build a press- and I
FINALLY have all the parts together!! I was supposed to have it assembled by now,
BUT the machine shop was 3 weeks late getting my rollers done, so I am going
to have to wait a while to get it up and running, but I will post a link to
some info on it when I do!

" I am keen to work more with lino and woodblock. I have tried a couple of
lino, but NEVER a woodcut! I see this as a long learning path, rather than
a quick overnight venture."
I joined this group to learn wood block. It is indeed a long learning path
but one worth traveling. Jump in and join in and ask all the questions you
want to. Thid group is very supportive.

Just F.Y.I., I believe that all college art majors are required to take a life drawing course in which they draw from a nude model. I think that is a requirement for college accreditation, just in case anyone is getting excited about us doing a nude print. So the colleges protect our right to see humans without clothing on, just as museum directors also do.
Please correct me if I am wrong about this.

Pornography is another topic entirely. That's an explicit view of lovemaking that shows the genitals. The Baren group call that pillow prints. I could be a coordinator for a print exchange about nudes, but I don't want to send out pornography. I'd have to send those back to the person, if I got any, I guess. I don't know the legal implications for me as a school teacher. It's just too risky. I don't want some student's crazy parents deciding that I am a bad influence on their child and taking the law into their own hands. I got out of a situation in which the man wanted to take photos of me nude, smoke dope, and then videos and then...that was the end of the relationship. I got out as fast as I could. I don't want to put my toe back in that water and I really don't even want to be anywhere around that swimming pool.

I say this because I belong to a printmaking group which had an opening and the organizer pulled a quickie on me. He put a bottle of wine in my hand and asked me to pour wine and then later they had a lady painting a nude woman and then printing her on a piece of fabric on the floor, all which was against City of Berkeley regulations. Of course a cop in uniform came in and asked me for a drink, but I refused to serve him and he relented and didn't close us down that day.

So if I am coordinator and you do that to me, I think I will have to make my own report this time, which is something like a conspiracy to take my civil rights away from me.

I hope these words meet your acceptability standards as being on the topic of printmaking.

Well, all ended well as usual and the festival was successful for only some.
Seems folks are watching their pennies out there but I was lucky to come out
well on the winning side.
Always exciting to talk to returning collectors and even more to lure new
admirers into the world of the woodcut. Gazillions of traffic through the
booth and many handouts given out.

I also thought I would mention that Annie Bisset's blog had some admirers
that had been following her making of a woodcut. Small world indeed. They
made a purchase, so thank you Annie.

Aside from that, no rain, no wind to speak of and as smooth a tear-down as
could be expected with 500+ artists all trying to get vehicles into a small
space within the span of an hour. Always exciting to watch...and wait...and
watch...and wait...

With the world of giclees and now pure digital photography well in apogee in
the festival circuit, I find more and more people walking into my booth and
asking rather tiredly whether anything is digitally and/or mass produced.
They seem very relieved when I show them my trusty hand tools and point out
the hand-made paper. Maybe a return to the traditional is coming.

'Bout it on that, I think I may have lured some ASU art students into Baren,
so...

Maria

It is interesting how the nude brings such fickle baggage to the art table of discourse. Your concerns are valid and if acceptted by the collective Bareners then there should be a dictated list of parameters (no really) to which one follows in the strictist sense. Then when one of the artists strays from his or hers documented guidelines the printmaker nazis' can seize him or her and inter them into a calico pot turning ceramics death camp.
This is the 21 st century and we are all adults practicing in the real world where 2+2=4 right?!!!
Should the potential power of a Barens printmaking work cause you to concern about viewing its' subject matter then perhaps as a collective we have failed you. It would seem you feel storngly about what may be printed and being the coordinator may not be suited for you too take responsibility for. I ask you, have nudes not streamlined throughout art history and are the art history books found at your local ADULT BOOK STORE?

I think we've succeeded as a group because we try to treat one another
with respect even when we have disagreements. And there have been times
when people's patience has been put to the test, but finally patience
and tolerance has won out.

Greetings to you all especially the exchange #27 printers of "Mythical beasts."
My prints have just arrived in England.
Mike and Bea, thank you for your patience and all the work involved in sorting and posting. I much appreciate your voluntary efforts.
Needless to say also thanks to the gifted printmakers involved. The prints are fabulous : they are so original and diverse.

*I can't upload another print to our 'Newest print' section in the BLOG. Lurkers may think that there are only three active members in 2006: Brad, Mike and myself !
I'll sneak one in here instead http://homepage.ntlworld.com/h.french1/FELDWEG.htm
Since joining Baren two years ago I have focused on printing in formal editions especially for the exchanges and also variant experimental ones with a/p : v/p signatures.
My downfall has always been colour printing in the reduction method which I love to hate. With all the unique possibilities of overprinting, transparent / opaque inks, tints and extenders I often lose detail which results in abandoning and recycling whole editions. However, I have selected just one print from an abandoned edition and drawn
the detail in with a permanent black ink pen. It's neither a print nor a drawing, but I'll risk a hyperlink now that the forum is in a relaxed mood.
