Hello,

Has anyone ever used a vertical hydraulic press for printing wooducts?

I've found one for a little over $100 here in town and thought it
might work for the 8"x10" woodcuts I do.

Thanks,
Chris

I'd have a few questions.

1. Can you control the pressure?
2. The surfaces applying the pressure appear to be very narrow. Can
you rig up some surfaces that will spread out the pressure evenly across
the block?

With a narrow surface and too much pressure and/or pressure that can't
be controlled, you risk splitting your block. Also, if you can't spread
the pressure evenly across the block, you won't get an even impression.

hello,
Some of you out there might be interested in this. I submitted some of my works. If you get in, there is quite a bit of press and exposure.
cheers, Rob

Yeah, I agree Myron.... I'd have to make a bottom and top "bed" that
the prints sits between to even out the pressure.

Hydraulic presses do work for printing woodblock, but they must be properly
set up. It is not difficult to build a simple press from an automotive
bottle jack. I have posted a simple design before. Myron, Chris, I have
sent both of you a photo of a more complex press ... the photo was sent to
me by a prof. at Queens University.

Charles, can you post that design again? I would like to see it with the
thought of possibly making one.

hello,
I am using one of the $4 pla-barens from the mall and I want to get something better. I have been reviewing the feedback on the Baren forum site and elswhere but now would like some 'live people' opinions.
with cost not a factor, what do you folks recommend?
I would like something that can do pretty fine details yet accept a lot pressure. I use waterbased pigments.
My blocks are not very large and I don't plan on getting to big with them.
ball-bearing barens are up for consideration as well.
I would think something, medium in size. I have relatively large hands. Thanks, Rob
