I was looking up some info on british printmakers when I came across
artfacts.net. This is something of a gallery/research website about
artists, auctions, trneds, etc. While to access the meat of the info you
have to be a member and pay...there is a free artist chart that ranks over
44,000 artists.......you can look up your favorite artist by name or just
have some fun reading the list.... the top 100 artists are free....and by
the way #1 & 2 have been known to do a wooblock or
two !!!!

The rankings do not seem to be too nice towards Japanese
printmakers...while I found Hokusai, Yoshida & Saito....their ranking
(whatever that means !) was
really low.. There was no entry for Hiroshige or Jacoulet.
Oh...funny....there sat Yoko Ono at #101 well ahead of Piet Mondriaan,
Claude Monet, Joseph Albers and Frank Stella....what gives ?????

have fun & thanks....Julio Rodriguez

Ive been reading the dialogue about rice flour and feel something may have
been missed. if you boil the rice flour ,as you should, you are producing the
starch in exactly the same way as boiling rice itself. Rice flour is just
ground rice. Both need the heat to produce the starch.Wasthe heating of the flour
ommitted ?

I mixed the rice flour with cold water and then heated it in a pan on the
top of the stove, exactly as I do with starches (corn starch, tapioca
starch, etc.). It congealed in much the same way, but the end product was
grainy ... it was not very smooth between the fingers. Wheat flour, on the
other hand, produces a nice, smooth paste when treated in the same way. At
least that has been my experience.

Hi,

I've uploaded a scan of my latest woodcut block, Paleo Umi:
http://pressing-issues.blogspot.com/

I'll see how it prints up tomorrow in lab. It's a collaboration with my son -- his idea, my design.

The Dukhobors were a religious group who fled from the USSR and who settled
in remote areas of Canada. They are well known here because of their
conflicts with the Canadian government, and the subsequent imprisonment
from time to time of members of the group. Cecil Planedin is a Dukhobor
artist who has been doing wood cuts for years. His work is quite striking,
and often political. You might enjoy seeing some of it at:

Saw your name on the print show in NM.
Wish I could go down and see all the work.

Hello Robert,

Yep ... I too wish I could go and drool. I always learn so much by looking
at the work of others. I was quite honored to have been included.

Ellen,
what fun to create something with your son! The block looks beautiful. Best wishes on your blissful printing. (well, in my mind it will be blissful :) When you say 'lab' is this what you call your studio? Are you working in a school? Hmm. Just wondering. Have a great weekend,
