Hello to you all!
I have signed up for the New Year informal exchange! How fitting, My first Hanga woodcut is my silky terrier as I have mentioned. I am carving the fifth block now. I was going to use just 6 blocks, but it looks as though I am going to add a seventh. (I want to add a nice soft blue background tone to it)
Thanks to everyone that gave me input on my depth of cuts! I am very happy with what I have so far. I have done a few things out of order on this project so I hope it works well. It seems to be coming together ok.
I am having a great time!
Cheers, Rob.
Yesterday I went to the NY Print Fair.
What an experience to see all the known names and names unknown to me
exhibited in one place. I focussed on woodblock prints -- eye-boggling and heavy
breathing, which is standard for what happens when I view prints, Baren
woodblocks and others
Forced to just mention one discovery at the Fair:
Tuula Moilanen Finish woodblocks at the Verne Collection Booth. I saw a
Series of Stretching Cats.
She says she's always had a superpowerful imagination and I agree.

I connected with Roberta Waddell, the Curator of the NYC Library Print
Collection who acquired our Monumental Collaborative Puzzle Print. She certainly
received it and is enjoying the Baren print.
The Gallery owners were very approachable and, if you know me, I spoke to
many of them( and they spoke back!) I spread the Baren info to those who
featured woodblocks and some took down the website. Many interesting stories and
amusing conversations...
There was a Gallery that had a Shunga showcase. and I told the owner about
our Shunga Exchange. Very interesting! Another gallery owner who was a Lefty
printer himself was intrigued by the account of the Lefties Can Carve.
At the Food Cafe another person and I tried to figure out what was in the
sandwiches with the cute little tomatoes on the top. Later I found myself at
his Booth and told him my sandwich was quite good. Coincidentally we were
standing in front of a lithograph called "Mysterious Sandwich" which had the same
cute tomato on top. For that shared experience he laughed and said I should
buy it as a memento.
Names too numerous to mention, but from my notes:
Gaugun had 2 exactly alike woodblock portraits exhibited, one impressionwas
from the cancelled plate.
Max Beckman had an exhibited Woodblock "printed on thick imitation paper"
This thought resonated with me, Sarah Brayer: "I'm able to take risks that I
don't take in everyday life"
I had to leave because I couldn't risk missing my bus.
Best to you all
Carol
