Dan, I send you best wishes for your surgery and for a speedy recovery, I know all of us on Baren are sending good thoughts.

Barbara, CONGRATS on the show, looks great! By the way, I'm assuming these are solarplate etchings, but are they mounted on panels or canvas or what? Looks really nice this way.

Andy and Louise, congrats on your respective upcoming exhibitions, these sound great!

best wishes all and happy printing,
Sarah

Greetings to List Members,

Let me introduce myself. My name is Nels Johnson, and I have just
joined this list. I have recently finished studying Moku Hanga at
the Drukstelle workshop (http://www.druckstelle.info/en/links.htm)
in Berlin, Germany, lead by Eva Pietzcker and Miriam Zegrer. They
have managed to instill their passion for japanese woodblock in me,
and I look forward to practicing it. Previously I have had training
in intaglio and lithography. I am also passionate about my photography.

I am wondering if list members can recommend periodicals that pertain
to this wonderful and historic form of printmaking.

Thanks.

Nels

Nels,
Welcome to the baren.
Two books that are very good and in print now are
"Japanese Woodblock Printmaking" by Rebecca Salter, US $19.95, from England I think
"Art and Craft of Woodblock Printmaking" by Kari Laitinen, Tuula Moilanna, Antti Tanttu, US $48 from Finland
Both are excellent, the one from Finland is hard cover, the other soft cover.
If you cannot find them locally, they are available from www.graphicchemical.com or www.imcclains.com McClains has supplies specifically for the Japanese woodblock style of printing while Graphic has general printmaking supplies.

This said, the best infomation is on this site, in the encyclopedia. You can read the one point lessons for quick help. The other best info is in the heads of all our members who are so willing to share information. So if you have trouble, ask questions.
Best to you,
Barbara

Japan Foundation is sponsoring a west coast tour of the Adachi Institute which is involved in making reproductions of ukiyo-e prints. The free demonstration will be in the Commons of Pacific NW College of Art, 1241 NW Johnson, starting at 12:20 and continuing to about 2 pm.

This looks pretty interesting so I am going to go watch them print. Maybe I will learn something new. Their reproductions are about $120 US so a reasonable price. Nice to know woodblock is alive and well in Japan! You can't have too many good prints as far as I am concerned!
Best to all,
Barbara
