>Why do we date
>our work?
I think there is an advantage in following our own development as well as
for other's to follow it. I don't think that art historians will ever follow my
progress but I enjoy it and I find it hard to remember what order things are
done if I haven't dated them. I do agree that the value of a piece of work
shouldn't depreciate with age, if anything it should appreciate.

I agree with Dale that the value should appreciate. Iım still rather an
emerging artist but if I sell a painting I date it and if its ³not for sale²
, I definitely date it, so that in my retrospective show years from now
these works will be part of a time line of my development. Yeah!
Iım thinking ahead.....
Ego aside,
I saw a show like this in Puerto Rico years ago of Puerto Rican master
painter, I forget his name..he was part of the COBRA movement I think, but I
remember the paintings and the effect they had on me. He had work from the
early 60ıs to 2000 and the progression , growth and even deviations are all
apparent and somehow made more important to me because of the dates on the
work. I could follow the paintings as a documentation of his evolving
philosophical system and style.
Anyway, I understand the frustration about competitions and dating. The only
way really I resolve it for me is to produce more work and that way ³I² need
to catalog the work somehow and dating then works for me regardless of the
desires of the ³powers that be².

I don't date my work.....but I remember the year very well. I do document it for myself with my slides so I could certainly give anyone that info if they wanted it. Once I am gone, who cares? If I ever get famous....I will enjoy knowing someone is trying to figure it out....hahahahahaha...that is if I ever get famous! Besides the baren list, I know we are already famous with each other!
Best to all,
Barbara
The only disadvantage I see when you do not date your work is; sometimes the exhibition you are entering HAS to have a date. Somehow they do not think anything older than 2 or 3 years is valid.
So , for myself and posterity (as Barbara says; hah, hah) I keep a journal of dates, editions, when sold, customer, etc.
As far as retrospectives, then it is important for people to see how you have advanced, changed, and where you are at at the present moment.

Jeanne

So Tom, are these crowed headed things supposed to be good or evil?
They certainly are fascinating. And I loved
the murky/dark quality of these prints. Wish I was a millionaire,
they'd be in my collection for sure.
