Wow. The link that Charles posted about Chinese artists who do hand-painted
reproductions of Western art for pennies was really really sobering.

These are not machine-made ink jet "limited editions;" they are literally
hand-painted oil paintings. This gets under my skin in a big way because
I've been a successful commercial illustrator for almost 20 years and,
studying my disturbing recent decline in revenue, I just discovered that I'm
now beginning to compete with illustrators in nations like China, India and
Russia who bid literally one tenth of what I need to charge for the same
work. I had naively assumed that my field was immune to outsourcing. There
are a myriad other pressures on my industry as well, but this one is quite
unexpected and amazing!

I'll be interested to hear others' thoughts on this and what it might mean
to the fine arts market (which I'm not familiar with). Seems like right now
it only cuts into the mass market, right?

Photographs can be used for any subject. Using a photo as reference does not necessarily mean the final piece is a photo or even photo realistic. Animals came to mind because I live where we often see deer, bear, ducks, blue heron,we go fishing a lot and live near a bird sanctuary. I was thinking on doing more with these subjects, the wild ones. But I thought if the theme was left to include both wild and domestic animals some who love to do cats and dogs would enjoy it.
Come on guys I might not even do the exchange, so lets hear your ideas, the last themed exchange had a lot of great input.

Hi,
I just hung an exhibit, including Maria's Baren Puzzle Project at the
Donnell Library Center, 20 W.53 ST. in Manhattan from today until July 28.. It is
just inside the main entrance in a locked glass case. The other cases have
some of my decalcomania (unique prints) and woodblocks.

IMHO The Puzzle Project Print can compete and more with MOMA across the
street.

I asked two ladies to come over so I could take a photo. Then they got very
interested in all the prints. They were an Asian Mother and teenage
daughter, making comments and pointing to many parts of the puzzle. We got into a
question and answer conversation. The teenager pointed to Frank Trueba's
print and said of the characters in it "That's my name in Japanese, 'Wisdom' " .
There's other mounted information about Baren and the brochure. The 2
enjoyed hearing something about David and Maria

For some reason this message was cut off., a vicitm of my computer!!!

A nice way to start the exhibit. I may be at the library a few other times
and will entice people to look and to continue the Q and A's. ( I have used
several successful subtle techniques in the past, as some of you may know)
Many library goers go directly in, get the book, leave.
Soon I will have the photos and get them to you. I'm going back on
Wednesday.

PS

Baren is full of "greatest". I hope I am one of the group

The experience with the two Japanese ladies was a lucky one-of-a-kind
experience.
