Greetings -
I am loath to bring this up, but it does affect a number of Baren
members, at least the ones in the Chicago area. On July 15-16, Graphic
Chemical & Ink Company is sponsoring a big open house/warehouse sale. I
can't seem to get it posted on our home page. Call us at 800-465-7382 if
you want details. Sharen pointed out to me that we have chosen
Rembrandt's birthday for the celebration, and while it was inadvertant,
it seems to be fortuitous.

I am a new member of the barenforum (and thrilled to have found it via James
Mundie's website) and I have a question regarding materials that I haven't
been able to find addressed in the archives or FAQ - not to say it hasn't been
discussed, just that *I* can't find any such discussion.

I see that wood block or linoleum prints are equally acceptable in most
(all?) exchanges. Due to the effects of aging and abuse my hands and wrists are
pretty damaged and I have been using Daniel Smith Safety-Kut as my plate
material because I find it easier to work with. Despite most people saying you can't
get fine detail with safety-kut I find it very workable, and the images
comparable to what I get with linoleum and a lot less painful to produce.

Is the high tech version of linoleum blocks as acceptable as the old
fashioned real linoleum as is the MDF block for wood block? I would like to
participate in future exchanges and swaps but don't want to violate the rules...

Dear Annie,

Welcome to Baren! If you sign up for an official Baren exchange, relief
prints made with safety-kut (or virtually ANY relief-carved or collographed
matrix) will be acceptable... Here's what we 'officially' say:

"MEDIUM: woodblock print (hand rubbed or pulled on a press, B&W or colour,
any pigments, any paper). Note: The Baren Exchange is a program for forum
members to create, exchange and display editions of woodblock prints.
Relief prints pulled from wood substitutes and wood-like materials,
including linoleum, corian, MDF, resingrave, and similar are acceptable as
are collagraphs. Coordinators are obligated to reject prints whose primary
method of production is by other means. For example: monotype, intaglio,
stencil, lithography, ink jet, laser, photocopy, etc are to be rejected by
the coordinator. "

Annie...

Welcome... Mike has already answered your question, but I just wanted to say that I, as a non-wood printmaker, have always felt very welcome here...

Hello all! I have been so busy running around this summer I have not posted
much, but I have been thinking of you! I have been giving a lot of woodcut
workshops, I always recommend the Forum for more woodcut information.

My next teaching trip is to Santa Fe, I hope to catch printmaker Lezle
Williams there, she is organizing a wood engraver's meeting
www.newmexicoprintmakers.com.

When I was in Santa Cruz last month, Frank Trueba brought along a wonderful
all-hanga portfolio to show the class. I was so envious! It was a nice
format, too, tall and thin. When will we do anther all hanga one?

I love teaching woodcut, but I have to say it makes it difficult to keep up
with making prints. Mike is an inspiration, being so productive, so I have
to try to catch up in the fall by spending more time in the studio. I just
got some of that nice Iwano paper (also encouraged by Mike!) so I have to
get busy and use it up!

In September I will teach yet another workshop at the Lower East Side
Printshop, but then I will start some new prints. I must confess to doing a
lot of digital bookmaking in the meantime, it seems more compatible with an
interrupted schedule. (Plus I find it helps develop my ideas for
woodcuts...it's all connected.)

I have to thank Baren Forum for helping me with all my woodcut projects,
Mike, Dave, Sadako, Barbara and others behind the scenes.
