Sharri I was in Woodcrafters 2 weeks ago in Portland. They are on about 2nd just before the burnside bridge, in East Portland. They said they were not the same as Woodcraft. They sent me to the Tigard Woodcraft store for the item I was looking for. So there are 2 different companies, it is confusing. But there is a store in east Portland and it does sell hardwoods and also has cutting knives and sharpening tools and it is called Woodcrafters, check the Portland phone book. My husband had used this store for years for specialty wood supplies and took a class from them before he refinished our hardwood floors. The Woodcraft store in Tigard also is a great spot for cutting tools and sharpening tools, they have a nice leather strop.
If you have another hardwood store there it would be nice to also have that address.
Don't want to just talk about wood places in Portland but because our summit is coming up I do think the list should have an idea what they might be able to get while in the Vancouver/Portland area.

Hi ,

I am new to the forum. My name is Sandra. I accidentally visited the Baren forum while researching information on African woodblock print and Japanese woodblock print. I decided to join.

My question is to Graham regarding forum dated Tue.. June 1998 "Wood block print originated in Egypt in the year 2000 BC." What historical reference source can you cite to support this statement?

So far I haven't been able to locate much information on African woodblock print. Please direct me to the proper sources.

Thanks,

Sandra

Mike Lyons said that Tokyo would be a blast, and he was right!

I was fortunate on my trip there to catch the last day of a show called "The
Warmth of Woodblock Prints: From Kobayashi to Munakata" at the Fuchu Art
Museum. It was all "Sosaku (Creative) Hanga" and it was the first time I've
seen so many woodblock prints all in one place. The exhibit introduced me to
many artists I'd never seen before.

A few of my favorite artists from the show:

Kawakami Sumio

Maekawa Senpan

Maeda Masao

The show also got me really excited to come home and delve deeply into my
own exploration of this medium. I'll be quite busy for a while as I grope my
way towards this goal, but I'll post a link to my web site once I have
something to show you all.

Thanks again for being here.

Thank you for sharing, Annie. I spent a long pleasurable time looking at your favorites and the links.
I always liked the quote found there: "If you don't like my art, turn it
upside down." Inspriration comes in many ways.

Dear Sandra,

Graham has not been active in BarenForum for several years, Sandra, but if
you want his reply to your question you might try to email him directly at
gscholes@woodblock.info

Good luck (and welcome)!

Mike

hello to all Bareners

the sun finally came back out in downeast Maine
and along with it comes a new website for my woodcuts
hosted and designed by fellow Baren member, Rudolf Stalder,
many thanks to Rudolf for his efforts and encouragement

in February i mentioned having a 30 year "RETRO-FUTURE-SPECTIVE"
- -as i called it-of my work in woodcuts ,woodcut collages and paintings,
in the Art Galleries at University of MAINE at Machias
also showed exchanges # 9 and 13

now at last , i may share that with you folks
along with my revised and updated website
check it out at :

http://www.rst-art.com/gattowoodcuts.htm

click on 'Maine University Expos' to see the show

presently i am designing my block for exchange 25 Dreams and Visions

in reference to the quest for wood blocks that are easy to cut
may i suggest mahogany as a very easily cut wood
also pretty easy to find
the mahogany venner/teak veneer plywood blocks-
(one on each side of a half inch block)
that i have found at yard sales
probably are in hobby stores etc since its used for ships' models

they- Mahogany and Teak- both have a discernable grain- not a solid back
and in my experience-Maple IS NOT hard to carve -if tools are sharp ;-)

one of my favorite blocks is a piece of Yellow Cedar
a friend sent me from Juneau Alaska
cuts like butter and does not splinter
i love to get some more of that!

this weekend i will be demonstrating traditional (European oily) woodcut
techniques at Alone Moose Gallery
in Bar Harbor,Maine -on West Street from 7-9 pm
in conjunction with the gallery's thirtieth anniversary show
"Something TO CROW about" the theme is CROWS, of course .....

happy cutting and printing to all
