Barbara,
When are the dates for the June workshop and how do we get there?
Is it at your studio?
Thanks
Robert

Bridget,
Robert probably meant to send this only to me and not
to the baren list as this is a two day solar plate
workshop with Dan Welden on June 14 and 15. If you are
interested let me know and I will give you the rest of
the info...

Everyone,
On another note, Sharri LaPierre, Claudia Coonen,
Patti Phar-Camp, Linda Kelen, Kent Kirkpatrick and
myself from the baren list are at a wrokshop on
Vancouver Island in British Columbia taking a
woodblock class from Richard Steiner from Kyoto. There
are three people from Victoria we will pull onto the
list by the end of the week!

Richard's approach to woodblock is definitely less
classical than Dave Bull and quite a bit more
inventive than what I have learned in the past.
We have spent several days carving our blocks. Richard
traces his image on a piece of mylar, including the
kento marks, and transfers to the blocks with double
sided colored carbon paper. We will need to get this
from Japan as I have never seen it in the states. He
also puts his side kento mark near the end of the
paper and not 3/4 of the way down the side as I have
learned in the past. We are printing this afternoon,
and know Richard does not use a traditional baren, but
a disc baren. So it should be really interesting. I
will report more later...we are having so much fun, it
must be illeagle to have this good a time.
All 9 of us in the class are going into Victoria
tonight to look at prints and go out to a "fancy"
restaurant...hummmmm.
Best to all,
Barbara

hi everyone. It's been hard for me to keep up with all my email these days. Anyway, in response to Mike's post in which he said that he had trouble mixing methyl cellulose and that it could take a couple of days to even out -- I'm not sure where you purchased your methyl cellulose, Mike, but the material which I bought from Talas a number of years ago was quite a fine powder and quite easy to mix and to further dilute if necessary, and I'm speaking as someone who tends to be rather sloppy with materials :)

At any rate, if anyone should care to try the methyl cellulose from Talas, here is their website:
http://www.talas-nyc.com/

which I was quite surprised to find as last time I went to the store, they didn't accept credit cards :O

they also have lots of other fun stuff there!

enjoy --

hi folks, I looked around the Talas website and could not find the methyl cellulose, but if you give them a call you can find out if they still have it (which I am pretty sure they should).

Here it is Sarah :)
http://nt.bnt.com/talas/menu.html?category=185 (under Book Binding
adhesives).
The methyl cellulose I use is a different brand but fine powder as well
and is quite easy to stir up and let set until it turns clear and
thickens up. I've never had to shake mine. I use only a bit of the
powder at a time. In a small airtight Rubbermaid container, mix 1/4
teaspoon powdered Methyl Cellulose to 2 Tablespoons of distilled water.
Its more than enough for an exchange and the leftover amount stores
safely in the airtight container.
Bette.
