Greetings All,
The prints for the 23 exchange have just arrived in Lincoln, UK. They are staggering in their range of ideas and techniques. Thank you to all especially Maria our co-coordinator. In my rural environment I must be the envy of woodblock printers/collectors and the owner of a brilliant collection of international prints. Baren's reputation is so well known (I wonder why ) that the Arts Education Officer is to send what's left of my Baren Brochures to every centre of education in the county.
I know that many of you like to add print venues to your CV's so here goes. I hope to be with the Lincoln Diocesan Board of Education as a multimedia leader on a course for headteachers ( school principles in American wording? ) in July and just can't resist involving Exchange #21,lefties can carve... AND NOW the Exchange #23 to boost printmaking, the Baren Image and promote participant printmakers as exhibitors at the Wisby Educational Centre, Lincoln, England, UK.
Every little helps!

Hi all,

I was just notified that the Artelino auction site where baren member Tom
Kristensen had his recent (very successful) sale has included a 'bio' page
for me also! What a pleasure that is, and -- Harry -- you'll note that my
resume is just 'stuffed full' of Baren exhibitions, including YOURS
:)! Here's a link: http://www.artelino.com/artists/mike-lyon.asp?arp=0

I'm already at work on the Exchange #23 pages -- the gallery should be 'up'
pretty soon -- I'll let you know...

Hi all. It seems that I am always in awe of everyone's accomplishments. I
have to say that the Baren site is the first hit if you 'google' my name, so
I feel that there is so much to be thankful for to this group. Last fall, an
editor of one of our free news magazines saw my surimono print on my desk,
and asked to use it in the magazine, in black and white. I never heard back
until last month, when they asked me if they could use it on the cover. So
have a look: www.branches.com They put it on their front web page for
the two months that it is on the cover. Whohooo!

woohoo is RIGHT! That's GREAT news! I think that we're catapulting one
another up by our own bootstraps! Keep up the great work -- we're on a roll!

Send Message: To this poster

Hi all. I have been an avid reader of this forum for the past 8 months and
decided it was time for my first post. I guess an introduction would be the
best way to start. My name is Ian and I am from Northern Rhode Island in
the United States. I have been doing linocuts for about a little over a
year now and am finding it is one of my favorite mediums. I am a fan of moku
hanga and currently my favorite artists are Shiro Kasamatsu and Jim Pollock.
All of my pieces were printed using Speedball inks because of their ease
of availability. I am very interested in trying out pigment powders and
mixing my own colors. Has anyone shopped at the baren-mall, how far does 1
gram of powder pigment go? Is there anywhere in the United States I can get
powder pigments or something comparable? I have printed on hosho paper and I
really like the way the inks set into the paper. But, that is the closest I
have come to the Japanese style. I would like to thank everyone for all the
useful information posted to this board over the past year.

A big welcome to the Baren.
Talk to Dan Dew , he is a great linocut artist and he also uses Speedball.

Yes, wow! I picked up mine at the post office, had lunch with a
printmaking friend & then shared the first viewing with my "influential
printmaker" & his class at Marylhurst. Certainly the best way of
viewing an exchange! Dennis was tickled at my choosing of him for my
print & several students were really interested in Baren. I hope some
of them will join us - they were sure turning out some nice work!

On a different note - Sharri we had quite a discussion on your print -
I understood the hanga puzzle & the red & black in oil ink - but what
is the shadowy part behind the actual print? Is it printed on your new
digital printer? We talked about it for quite a while & still couldn't
decide - I told them I would find out & let them know!

And John, what a delightful surprise to get an extra print just for
hanging in there until the end. Nice print - thank you so much!

And Maria maria mmmaaaarrrriiiiaaa - excellent job of keeping us on the
straight & narrow for this exchange. Well, as straight & narrow as you
can herd a bunch of cats, anyway! All the students are eagerly
awaiting your appearance on "Crafters"! :-)

Great exchange folks, I am proud to be a part of it!

Ian,
I really liked the way you presented the images on your site as well as the actual work. What a good idea to show so many copies and such a choice of color. Good job!
You can get powdered pigment at Guerra (sp?) in NYC....April Volmer uses this pigment, you can email her at her site, www.aprilvolmer.com to get more info and find out the colors she uses, they have thousands so a little help will go a long way. You can add a little alcohol to help with the dispersion to make a paste. Look in the archives of the barenforum, go to the bottom or top of the baren page and put "pigment" into the google search...lots of stuff will come up. Also, I think there is a company in San Francisco, Synopia...again I am not sure of the spelling, but they also have dry pigment. the mall colors do not translate exactly to western colors that we are used to, so there is no 'Ultamarine blue" but there is a close color.
I think one gram of pigment is enough to start with and after you chose your colors you can always buy more.
Best to you,
Barbara

Is it possible for me to get off the old digest
list and still keep recieving the 'new' list? I
really like the new format better. Thanks -Christina

Hi Chris, (and anyone contemplating changes in their baren
subscriptions)

Yes, just go to http://barenforum.org/ & to the baren subscribe page -
it allows you to change versions of the digest and/or subscribe or
unsubscribe to any of the baren lists.

Here's a repeat of a post I made earlier explaining to everybody how the
'new' Digests work; sorry I can't exactly help do what you want!

Dave

As there are perhaps quite a number of relatively 'new' Baren members
who weren't here when we switched our Digests to a new system last
year, it might be worth explaining what is happening here, and why you
are receiving two digests.

You receive the 'old' digest directly from the Majordomo listserver
that runs the Baren list. We cannot control the formatting of that
Digest, and it is usually full of garbled HTML code. What we did to get
around this is create an alternative version of the Digest - the 'new'
version, without garble - and started sending that to all subscribers.

So you no longer need the 'old' version, but if we remove your name
from the Majordomo list, you will be unable to post to Baren ... (It
doesn't have a 'vacation' setting that would allow you to stay on the
list, yet not receive that 'old' Digest.).

So ... long story short ... we have no way to avoid your receiving both
versions, the garbled 'old' one, and the 'clean' new one. But the
solution is simple - please just set your email filters so that the
'old' version is rejected and discarded automatically. I can't give you
specific instructions on how to do that, as each mail client program
has its own system, but look for 'Filters or 'Rules' in your software.

Thanks for your patience; receiving two versions is a small price to
pay for having the clean readability of the 'new' version also in your
mailbox, we feel.
