Found an article that well illustrates the process used by engravers
and printers to produce magazine pictures - the state of the art in
America in 1880. It was the reason i purchased this bound collection of
articles from Scribner's magazine.
it is several pages long and has many illustrations showing how
engravings were printed with decent quality , en masse.Covers how the
intent of artist, engraver, and printer needed to be understood and
communicated for acceptable result. How the improvements in mechanical
presses, and better understanding of how to prepare blocks for the
press, in the 19th century led to an ability to make the 125,000
copies of a 16-page sheet on a large press, specifically the "Hoe
Stop-cylinder press".This press looks for all the world like a mammoth
version of a Vandercook proof press, and must have been the model for
it.
Suggestions as to a good way to share this would be appreciated. it is
quite readable and informative. I thought perhaps i might scan the
pages ( typing them would be ab a bit of a chore ) and upload them as
a set to the baren , (surely they are public domain by now)as part of
the Woodblock encyclopedia or elsewhere.
What say?

Should be a real interesting addition to Baren.
