Dan,
I hesitate to say anything other than worshipping words when it comes
to Mike, the KC guru of hanga, but that wonderful Yamaguchi paper he
recommends is truly wonderful, but very expensive for a beginner. I,
also being a rank beginner, prefer the shin torinoko from McClains - it
is much less expensive and you can get the feel of the process, the
proper dampness of the paper, and all those other touchy little details
worked out on this paper before graduating to Mr. Yamaguchi's
wonderful, glorious, product. I'm still waiting to graduate, maybe
soon. I used the $20 a sheet stuff from McClain's for my large prints
last year and there truly is a difference, but you will appreciate it
much more when you aren't throwing out as many prints. (Of course, you
may not have these problems!) The shin torinoko is also what Yugi
Hiratsuka had us use in his hanga class a million years ago when I took
that class......

Cheers!
Sharri

I vote for shame as amanda suggests , for another exchange soon. I'm
fine with dreams and visions- covers a good bit o ground.
If i don't decide to do this one I'll be into a shame one later.
It can be seen as bogus or mistaken if one is too harshly self judging.
Or necessary as in the case of changing the behavior of a lot of people
in a short time. Public shaming is sometimes a good thing. Often it is
a weapon as well though, not always fairly applied.
I'm veering offtopic here...

So on a more print oriented front-

I have a lovely print hanging in my window here. It is one of Ruth's.
It has some chrysanthemums, or dahlias perhaps, in a garden with high
spiky weeds behind, .
she is really good with color I think. I like the combinations and
contrasts in her work.
There is a real precise feeling to her carving but also a lyric quality.
Cool.

I defer to the majority on theme... I love all of the ideas. My biggest
concern at the moment is to make the list ... scrambling over all the rest
of you... I've got my running shoes on and am primed for tomorrow!!!

I just found out what I'll be doing for the next 8 Saturdays- Bay area
bareners take note-
this was something announced today at the SF letterpress mailing list.

Hi all:

Bob Pinetti is teaching his intro to letterpress class at CCSF Ocean
Campus. You'll learn to
set type and print on a Vandercook, and the class does a book project
together involving
die cutting and scoring on a platen press. Printing with polymer
plates and/or linoleum
cuts may also be on the agenda...

Come on by this Saturday, April 2 to enroll. Class meets for 8
Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3
p.m. in room V144 of the Visual Arts building at the Ocean (main)
Campus.

There's plenty of room, so sign up now!

Grendl.

I emailed Grendl and she says there is room, the class is two or three
units at $ a unit26 plus a ten dollar enrollment fee.
So less than a hundred bucks gets you 48 hours of instruction and at
least some acces s to a a Vandercook, not to mention some new contacts
and mentors.
Not a bad deal. And- I'll be there!
So how can you lose. Come join us- I'm gonna learn to make books. If
you're nearby you can too.
This is at City College of San francisco.
Serendipitous, I say.
Maybe they won't mind if i videotape the class.
mwahahaha.....!
