Michelle, plans for the summit are just getting made early. The reason I
contacted the suburb city of Gresham about a showing for works is because I
know they plan a whole years calendar way in advance and i wanted to see if
they could fit something in for 2006 as 2005 is already booked. Relax and
places to stay will come about. I am certain the many bareners in the
Vancouver and Portland area will have a long list of places to stay and
things to do. Do not fear lack of knowledge about hanga or carving. i was
so bad at my carving that the space I used on the table for a gift to Mike
Lyon at the first summit was really really amatuer looking, but no one
criticized it, they just helped me learn.
Everyone is kind and caring and all we want to do is share. If you come you
will be kindly included in everything.

Hey Michelle,

If you think you are just going to come and watch and enjoy the summit you
need to re think your plan. I speak from experience. I attended the last
summit and took only my camera, planning to meet people and just enjoy
their company.

These conniving people will have tools, wood, paper and inks available for
you to purchase, at a very good price, and will happily teach you what to
do. A wood block carver I am not. What I do to a lovely block of wood is
probably a sin somewhere. I did however finish my wood block and printed a
few copies.

I will be returning for summit 2006 and bringing all three of my carving
tools. I would be happy to share them with you. See, didn't I tell you
this was a conniving bunch, and it's catching too.

As long as I am talking about the summit I may as well tell you what I
would like to see this time. I would like some demonstrations or talk
about the different water based inks. I am still an oily person, but would
like to try the water inks.

Hi,
Count me in! 2006 Summit.
Afterward KS I realized that I missed talking to you enough. I had my head
in my wood, or the other way round?
And now to meet new Bareners also.

Michelle,
You are one year off as it is in August of 2006, probably starting on the 14th, and we are just in the thinking stages. We will consider what everyone wants and try to make it happen! Anyone who wants to can camp here but I am about 45 minutes from Sharri, maybe an hour if there is traffic so it is a drive. I have a van that holds 7. I am sure that closer to the actual date we can work this out. Maybe we can find a block of student housing at one of the colleges we can use, there are two in Vancouver...we will start working on all these things. Send any ideas to Sharri or myself and we will start the ball rolling.
We can do oil or hanga or both. My weak point is carving and I sure improved with a lesson from Michael Schneider from Vienna at the last summit. He only spent about 5 minutes with me, but maybe I was just ready to hear what he was saying. When the time is right you just learn more.
Best to all,
Barbara

Michelle,

This is just to tell everyone to relax - the Summit of 2006 will have a
questionnaire on the web site soon. Everyone who intends to come can
fill it out and we will have a better idea of who needs what, where and
how much. Mike and Maria are working on that and I'm rounding up
information on campgrounds, motels, etc., but I haven't had a minute to
tend to that. In fact, it just plain won't happen for another couple
of weeks - there are too many jobs with deadlines ahead of that one!
Be patient with me, I don't move as quickly as I used to. LOL

Cheers,
Sharri

Greetings one and all.
It's sometime since I mentioned good weather and prematurely announced it was early spring and time to get into my unheated small studio in the next village
...wrong... I forgot I live in England,UK, historic home of unreliable weather : it has snowed, poured, blown, gone sub zero and fogged me out all because I made a comment on the Barenforum. Anyway my unexpected rest has allowed me to gain a new web skill (coloured/textured backgrounds) and for me that's ground breaking.
*If you have time check out my latest experiments in wood engraving. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/h.french1/index.html
The pages are busy, but are only really for Barener's, lurkers and semi lurkers. The wood was from a Christmas tree, an old chair and a dining table leg, Some of the 'paper' is crushed cotton fibre.......an old white shirt that I tore up and put into an ancient food liquidizer, boiled for an hour or so in a saucepan then sieved through a silkscreen frame and mercilessly crushed and rolled in my intaglio press.
In conclusion : I'll stick to cutting in known woods and pursue papermaking at a very low level...well maybe.
*I always visit the hyperlinks that you all present on the forum : they are always well worth it, but your recent website prints and reunions are astounding.
Thank you as always,

Hello all,

I will work on the Baren Summit 2006 Initial Survey tonight and let everyone
know when it is revised and posted. This will give us all more of a feel for
who, what, when and where. Just been a wee bit busy.

The organizers are already working behind the scenes to gel some ideas and
logistics. Taken from last summit experience, once we know the committed
group and everyone's needs and wants, we organize around that (taking into
account what is possible, of course).

So stay tuned and be patient! All in good time.

Maria

"Taken from last summit experience, once we know the committed group...."

Ha, ha...yes Maria you are right we should all be "committed" !

Are there motels or hotels near Sharri's place ?
I would opt for staying at one, unlike our stay at Mike's where we used
his building to camp out....it's a different thing when staying at
someone's home...

James, wonderful website, enjoyed looking at your work and also your
wife's..love her painting style and her profile statement.

Hi everyone ,
I had a question and was hoping someone could help. I wanted to do some prints with 5 year olds and need some ideas on what kind of plate could be carved out easily. No sharp tools. Also any suggestions on types of ink?
Thanks Gilda

Get a styrofoam dish ( like the meat trays at the supermarket) and let the kids draw (with a pencil) on the dish impressing their line into the styro. Then use the Speedball water soluble inks.
