Carol,

I have a Roslyn Kean Ball Bearing Baren from Glebe in NSW. The
instructions that came with that indicated that it was suitable for
waterbase or oil base inks.

It says: "The baren should be kept dry at all times. To lubricate the
steel balls rotate on the felt pad during use - a few drops of non
drying clove oil have been applied to the felt. Do not put oil
directly onto the baren."

For assistance contact:
Roslyn Kean

email: rozkean@bigpond.com

I do not use mine for my hanga printing and only with oil based ink on
Kozo or Washi papers as I find with the thicker Western papers it tends
to buckle the paper up a fraction and then if the baren is again run
over an area of paper that has "lifted" I get a blurred image. So I do
only keep it for the Japanese type papers and then only light pressure
is needed with an Atagami (extra piece of paper between the printing
paper and the baren).

Email Roz directly and she may have more advice for you.

Hiroshi Tomihari when he was here with me he left me his hair oil which
he uses in Japan. It is Camelia oil.

Good luck,

Jan

Here's Julio's original message:

If you are new to Barenforum or just an oldtimer looking for a different look at our home 'website'.....go to Google.com, select 'Images' and enter the word 'barenforum'. You will be presented by a 'zillion' images of prints, photos & activities by our membership. The thing I like about this 'random' search is that it brings up images perhaps long forgotten or overlooked....check it out....it's quite a treat just trying to remember the images and putting a name to a print !

Hey, I FINALLY got my new computer going!!! I have not been posting because
my machine was problematic. Now I have two fabulous new SCSI hard drives.

How about starting with an invitation? How many bareners want to go to
Schnectady in February? Not a lot, maybe, but I am inviting everyone!
January 10 - February 14
"Moku Hanga at Union: An Exhibition of
Contemporary Japanese Woodcuts"
Arts Atrium Gallery at Union College
Schenectady, New York 12308
tel: 518-388-6145
The exhibition includes work by moku hanga artists from the US and Canada
who have worked to promote an understanding of Japanese woodblock: Suezan
Aikens, Takuji Hamanaka, Daniel Heyman, Mike Lyon, Bill Paden, Yasu Shibata,
Keji Shinohara, and April Vollmer.

I will give a gallery talk on Thursday, February 10, discussing the work of
these woodblock artists.

As far as Chamomile/Camellia, I don't know why camellia wouldn't work for a
ball bearing baren...except it is expensive! I use mineral oil on mine, and
have not found that it soils the back of my prints if I occasionally rub the
bearings on my baren wata.

I have seen dried olive oil (totally INappropriate) on a baren, it can be
removed with a solvent like paint thinner. Then clean the baren, and oil
lightly with mineral or camellia. I have not tried WD-40, except on my bike,
but it must work if Mike says so! (He usually knows what he's talking
about!)

Also, who is going to SGC? Southern Graphics Council in Washington DC? I
will look for Dean, anyone else? Maybe I will take a block for his table?

I just got back from a visit to Philadelphia where I saw Pontormo plus the
print collection at the Philadelphia Museum of Fine Art with my friend
Daniel Heyman. He was at the Nagasawa Art Park Program the year before I
went. It was a great opportunity to reminisce about Japan. I was in Japan
this fall studying and teaching Japanese woodblock. If anyone has not yet
checked out my photos (which include much woodblock information and even a
photo of Baren founder David Bull), please check it out!

Best wishes for 2005!

Thanks for the links to the Baren images, Julio. Caveat Emptor, though
- I googled myself and find that I am getting credit for two images
that aren't mine. One is Ruth Leaf's and the other, I think, is Tyrus
Clutter's. I run in good company!!

Cheers,
Sharri
