Harry -
One of the printmaking supplier newcomers here in the US has introduced
what I believe is the same lino substitute that you have talked about.
I've done some testing on it, and found a lot of the same things you
did. I didn't feel like it cut terrible well initially. Additionally,
when the samples arrived, the surface was rippled - quite uneven -
although that did work itself out a little as the "lino" got warmer.
It's good to hear from someone who has worked with this product and
suffered a similar fate. I'm sorry that it didn't work out the way you'd
hoped, but we all learn from successes and failures.

Julianne, congragulations on your new baby. Special events should be
allowed as postings!

Harry welcome to the ups and downs of exchanges. I got a kick out of your
problems, one needs to laugh them off and keep on going. Your work is
great! At least you finished your prints and did not quit, that is a good.
You know there are water based inks. They have nothing to do with freezing
linseed oil. Hanga takes a bit of hanging on to learn. And I think a
workshop is a must just to get ones feet wet. But if we ever have another
summit, well the learning there was better than any paid for workshop could
ever be. These people care and share as dear friends. This list continues to
teach me.

I used an inexpensive western paper for a small print and it worked okay,
but hey guys if you spend hours carving than spend dollars on the right
paper. I used a western paper for my surinomo print and it was okay but was
sorry I had not gone with a Japanese paper, it would have been just that
much better. So I ordered the paper sampler from the Baren mall and chose
some that was on the lower price range. I will be using that paper this
week. Hope it works to my expectations because>>>>>

An update on my slow progress with my little myrtle wood plate. I did a
second proofing yesterday and was so excited! I used my mortar and pestel
to grind these lovely Japanese pigments, the color was fabulous. I am
getting it down about how much water, rice paste and pigment, this print was
not blotchy at all, but smooth and even. WOW!!! All my delicate carving
showed through, but a few spots could be deepened just a tad, it won't take
much and than for the final printing. I am using my ball bearing baren and
still love how deep the colors are with one pass. Now for the Japanese paper
to run a series. What I have learned is to do it all with the right stuff
will bring out the best in what you do.

Oh and yesterday this crazy gringo chased a rooster down the street armed
with a digital camera. Got some good cock shots!

re: Western Papers for hanga

Daniel Kelly makes LARGE Japanese technique woodblock prints in Tokyo
http://www.danielkellystudio.com/ A few months ago I asked him about his
recommendations for paper for the large prints I'm planning this
year... He recommended Arches 90 lb. hot press (smoothest surface) -- it's
apparently no longer available in rolls, but is readily available in 22 x
30 inch sheets -- Dick Blick has a decent price: $2.38 per sheet. I've
experimented with it and it works very well for hanga -- quite strong, well
sized, takes the color very well, easy to work with and relatively
inexpensive. Good stuff!

Hmmmm.....I'm having trouble finding this Arches paper - what name is
it listed under? I found Arches watercolor paper (140 lb.) Arches 88
silk screen (unsized - I tried this because it's a beautiful paper for
oil inks - not so good for Hanga!) Arches cover? (2.39 per sheet)

Never mind - I found it by putting "90 lb." in the search engine!
Watercolor paper & it is on sale right now = 41% off regular price.

ARCHES 88 aka silkscreen is a waterleaf paper. This paper does not handle
well if you soak it because it is a waterleaf non sized. I like it for
printing woodengravings. It works well in press printing but it is too thick a
paper for hand printing. For hand printing you might want to use RIVES lt
weight. I have never printed it in a Japanese manner but I have printed it by
hand with oil based ink.

If you are new to Barenforum or just an oldtimer looking for a different
look at our home 'website'.....go to Google.com, select 'Images' and enter
the word 'barenforum'. You will be presented by a 'zillion' images of
prints, photos & activities by our membership. The thing I like about
this 'random' search is that it brings up images perhaps long forgotten or
overlooked....check it out....it's quite a treat just trying to remember
the images and putting a name to a print !
