Girls or other non tool persons. I grew up in a family that did not know
how to use tools, my dad included. I married a tool man. From the
beginning he laughed at how inept I was. So carving tools were interesting
to get to know. Sharpening a tool??? The answer for me was that nice
leather strop tool, easy and pretty painless. But with a nicked tool I had
to go one step further. it was called a stone. Thankfully my husband has
finally learned to let me stumble my own way through this. He handed me a
course stone he had brought to Baja and the 1000 grit sandpaper. I went for
it and than finished the job with the leather honing tool. Wow it was
really easy, just take your time and be sure to keep the tool the same shape
it was. I do think that after working with the tools and honing them I had
a true feel for what the shape should be and that helped. But do not fear
this, if I did it anyone can. If you can use those tools to carve that wood
with you can sharpen and repair them. Those of you who throw out cheap tools
because you fear sharpening them, just try it with them when you are ready
to toss them. If you can throw them out anyway you have nothing to loose.
I am proud of myself. Keeping tools sharp also mean i can work on harder
woods and get more detail, loving it!
