Tom,
This had me laughing out loud....as I certainly use photos for inspiration and sure use a photo process for my "real work" which is etchings using solar plates. I never exhibit the woodcuts as I think I will never get good enough at them to do so. I have a great friend who is a professional photographer and her work is like a painting...she just knows how to set the stage and get the light. If you want a tour of Deb Dewit Marchant's work start here...she also does oil paintings and pastels..

She just has so much talent it amazes me. I was never interested in photohraphy until I met her, now I appreciate it a lot more. We were at a trade show together a few years ago and one of the best photographers in the US came by and said she was the best undiscovered photographer working today....so we wondered how you get "discovered"
This same question we all ask ourselves about our work....do we all have to die to get noticed???? I have had a little personal noteriety this year, but not any about my real work...so what to do? Think I will just go back in the studio and finish #22. I love having the studio right outside the door, I have been in it faithfully every day! Wahoo!!!
Best to all,
Barbara

Marilynn, I am aghast that you are still using lacquer thinner to
transfer the image to your block. An iron (on high) works just as
well, and sometimes better. The only prerequisites I've run across
are: the xerox must be fresh (not something that has been in files most
of its life) and the iron has to get hot enough. Some of the new irons
don't, so an older one works better. Good luck! Try sanding the first
one off and have a go with ironing.
Cheers,
Sharri
Greetings to all,
I have so much enjoyed the beautiful Chinese prints, the photo-realism
discussion and the accomplishments of the forum.
Bill, thank you for the poetic reference to the woodblock as musical
instrument. I often tell my students who are impatient to paint a masterpiece right
off the bat that drawing and painting is like learning to play an instrument,
learning the chords, right hand, left hand etc, and practice practice practice!
Mary, I am printing the second and final color on my reductive woodblock for
the exchange, which is not just creeping but rushing forward!! (or so it seems
to this procrastinator). I will have it posted asap, and am looking forward
to the prints in return!
Best to all,
Renee Ugrin
PS Harry, I really enjoyed your New York. I live in Damascus...we have a
similar landscape--no bazaars or minarets :)
d-limonene cleaners also work very well and are much safer than lacquer
thinner. Here in Canada I use a product called TKO Orange. Check your local
health food store for a similar product.
Cheers .... Charles
Hi Bette:
Can the prints be sent so that they don't require a signature? I'm not usually
home when mail or UPS or FedEx delivers.
