The wood is basswood. That had occured to me mike. If I like the
wood, I will definitely split it. I did plane both sides already.

Thank again!
Thomas

Paper for back-coloring (urazaishiki) that Matt Laine asked about;

Any thin paper should work -- I have used several -- binsenshi and
waraban-shi from NY Central and unryu from Graphic Chemical. Munakata painted from
the back; printing from the back also works.
Munakata was self-taught. First he tried painting from the front and found
that it obscured the black lines.
Plan B-back painting.

The book Munakata Shiko, Philadelphia Museum of Art. is very interesting and
helpful. The video showed that he was so near-sighted he almost had to put his
nose on the wood.

Enjoy and experiment!

Near- sighted from Irvington, NY and yes, I am left-handed too.

UN-SIZED Japanese papers, that is... (sizing reduces absorbancy and wicking)

OOPS! I _thought_ it looked like basswood, but for some reason I also
thought you'd bought cherry? Basswood: Probably best to leave it one (two
at most) planks (greater tendency to warp on thinner planks)-- but you can
definitely carve BOTH sides... Grain of basswood prints a little 'dead' I
feel -- birch prints more pronounced grain than cherry, but doesn't carve
as cleanly.

Well - my daughter-in-law fell in love with one of your "large prints" and I let her have it. Clowns I think. I loved it too. Well maybe I'll get back into the swing of things. Thanks for encouragements. Bea

Hello Baren members! I joined a few weeks back and have enjoyed my
daily dose of printmaking every morning when I read the posts.
I have just returned to the woodcut after several years of not making
much art. I had to force myself through the first block, but now that
it is finished, I am already working on several more. The result can be
seen here, http://www.dirtynickel.com/newwork2004.htm. I have really
enjoyed looking at the prints other people have shared on this forum
and hope y'all enjoy mine.
On another note, are there any other members working in the northern
Nevada desert? Its easy to get isolated out here and I would love to be
in contact with some other printmakers.
Keep up the good work, everyone.

Welcome to Baren. I like your landscape woodcut. Looks like the great Southwest somewhere, Nevada possibly? Very clean reduction... Good color choices... And I really enjoyed cruising your paintings.

Maria Arango, one of our very talented members, lives in your general area...
