regarding the color contamination, I found this interesting. I fell like
such an amatuer that I did not suggest resting the paper and the block. But
in doing my first reduction print I found it was easier to take my time and
let the paper dry between runs while I carved the next stage of the print.
So far everything has been fine and the paper comes back with no problem,
but the color seems to set. The series is now dry and in the truck awaiting
unpacking and one more cut and run. (good pun)
Mike, I love the feel of this ball baring baren and was wondering, did you
say you keep yours oiled? We live in a salty beach climate where things
rust. Also will it glide even better oiled up a bit? But I do not want to
get oil on my paper when I try this out on my almost finished reduction
plate????

I watched part of the carving of the embossing block and it looks just
beautiful. I'm going to be sure to try to catch when the impression from
that block is made.

I was particularly interested in seeing you use the Hangi-to(?). I bought a
1.5mm Hangi-to to use but I haven't yet because it's so small and I can't
tell which way to hold it and I don't want to ruin it.

I will keep watching and learn what I can.

I have had good success with WD-40, a very light and volatile lubricant
which is available at any hardware store in the USA... I spray it on a
felt (a piece from an old etching blanket) and then roll the baren over the
felt -- you won't get oil on your paper if you don't over-oil the baren, I
don't think. I lubricate between each print by rolling the baren over the
oily felt and the baren continues to roll easily. But honestly, my
hon-baren is better... much better!

1.5!! I don't think I've ever _seen_ such a thing; these days I own
nothing smaller than a 4.5mm. What do you use it for, brain surgery?

Anyone care to quantify, for a pre-beginner, how one little flat disk that
you rub on the back of a piece of paper could be say, 100 times better than
another. (I'm comparing "starting at $640" to $8 here:
http://www.imcclains.com/catalog/baren/). When I first saw that I chalked it
up to the same kind of Japanese materials fetishism that results in things
like multi-thousand-dollar Go boards, but I figure there must be something
to it or you'all wouldn't be buying them.

I haven't even started down this road yet, and I'm already lusting after one
of those robo-carver thingys; thanks Mike!

Noooo... Not brain surgery LOL! Tree surgery!
I have been inspired to give it some more practice and think I've got it
(for a beginner with this sort of tool).
But I think I'll consider getting a larger one.
Although I think it will take me a while of practicing to be able to carve
something tiny and not hack it up with something like a 4.5mm.
I suppose it's all about keeping things sharp.
