Thanks, Emma, for going url bonkers. There are so many great things
out there if we only know where to look for them!

Cheers,

Hello to ye all on Baren.
A brief note of introduction, then I'll likely not post for a while. I
want to read the archived digests first.
Thank you for this m.l. which looks outstanding from the start, it is
wonderful that there is such a community and I hope to actively
participate
in future. I am a pre-newbie to this , having begun to draw in pen and ink
and finding great inspiration in the work of Rockwell Kent.
A web search introduced me to Walter J. Phillips' lovely Canadian color
landscapes and mysterious totem poles.
My first set of starter tools is on the way and I am looking for wood
blocks. I am excited to begin work and sat up late trying to carve a few
letters
with an exact-o knife. The "G" looked so nice...then I tried my first
print- ooops...oh yeah it needs to be cut in reverse! hehe, shoulda
started with a capital a or o or perhaps i.
I have dabbled with music (guitar) and video editing, poetry... I am
attracted to the artistic freedom and the patient slow work represented by
this medium.
Especially interesting to me is the dramatic contrast of black and white.
No form I've noticed makes better use of black.
So many knowledgeable and accomplished artists seem to be "here". Thanks
again for the opportunity to correspond and learn from all of you.
See you soon...I'll be browsing the websites and reading the letters about
you and your work. Any lists of links to further examples of wood
engraving, esp. Lynd Ward, Kent,
JJ Lankes, etc. would be most appreciated.

Cheers!

Welcome Robin!

These archives are a great place to lose yourself in. Loads of info.
I especially like coming across a good running dialogue about a particular
subject and following it to it's conclusion. Fascinating.

Also, checkout the Library on the Encyclopedia page.

Have fun!

You can purchase tympan paper for your vandercook from
Graphic Chemical or a company called NA Graphics.

If your vannie is the model I'm thinking of (with
registration clips), you roll it over the print block
for the impression and then remove the print from the
clips. If the vandercook has an inking roller system,
hold down the release ball on the side and this allows
the tympan drum to glide back into position without
getting printed on again.

Thanks Emma and Sharri for your ideas...

Emma's list really carried me away with all the lovely bindings to choose
from and even if I might eventually leave the shunga as is, I might always
try experimenting with some simple but gorgeous-looking bookbindings.
All the urls were inspiring and the idea of combining my printmaking with
books is really something I have not thought of yet.

Thanks again for all the suggestions and ideas!!
