Well, we are almost there. Three sets of prints arrived yesterday..... which means that there are only two sets outstanding. Both sets are from fill ins and should be here soon. Will let you all know when I start collating and when the prints are in the mail.

Good morning!

We have some Japanese print collectors and museum curators in
our group who might find this an especially good opportunity at
the Rare Book School, U. of Va.,Charlotte, VA.:

SCHOLARSHIPS for RBS JAPANESE PRINTMAKING COURSE
RBS has received funding that allows them to offer 50%
scholarships to library and museum curators wishing to attend
Sandy Kita's RBS course "Japanese Printmaking, 1615-1868,"
running 14-18 June 2004. Recipients of these scholarships will
pay $400 tuition rather than the usual $795. The scholarships
are directed at curators and rare book librarians who have at
least a few Japanese prints in their collections, but who know
little about them and who wish to know more, in order to assess
their interest and value, and to become more knowledgeable about
preservation concerns associated with such materials.

In their personal statements, applicants to the 2004 Kita course
should include a brief description of the Japanese prints in
their care. On a related front, we are pleased to report that
the new RBS course on Japanese illustrated books to be taught by
Ellis Tinios at the Walters Art Museum in July has attracted a
vigorous applicant pool. Early admit decisions for the Tinios
course will be made the week of 12 April.

I vote for the Four Elements or Haiku as a theme. I vote for the smaller
size recommended. If the theme is Haiku, I don't want to have to carve it. I
think having the poem on a separate piece of paper, attached or unattached,
would be the most workable idea.

Julie,

Xerox transfer is a good idea. It works great if you have a "fresh"
xerox, get it extra dark to ensure there is as much toner as possible,
and be sure you do it with adequate ventilation, which means outside,
preferably with you and your nose inside. If that is not possible then
wear gloves and hold your breath, as it is done with mineral spirits,
xylene or colorless blender felt pen. It can also be done with a very
hot iron, and then you don't have to wear gloves, hold your breath, or
go outside. And, remember to do a mirror image of your text, either in
your computer when you do your printout, or request the copy place to
do it for you. Color laser prints work as well as black & white, but
darker colors work better than light. Inkjet won't transfer, it has to
be laser toner.

I'm for leaving the haiku to each person to use which ever language
they use best! Incorporating the earthly elements should not be a
problem - everything has at least one of them!! (Is that profound, or
what??)

The smaller size for the haiku exchange would be my choice.

By the way, speaking of exchanges, I do like the prints in the Shunga
exchange. I wasn't able to get to
the post office until a day ago due to the weather. Nice prints,
everyone! Jim likes yours, Julio. At
least we think that's yours!

The deadline for the Baren Exchange 20 prints is now getting close. The prints are due May first. If anyone feels they won't be able to complete the exchange the deadline for dropping out of the exchange without penalty is April 1st.

We can make this the best exchange yet and get it done on time but the participants must not put off working on their print until the last moment.

I'm always glad to get any progress reports from participants.

The official languague for Haiku poetry is Spanish, I vote for all text in
the exchange to be in spanish...

El lenguaje oficial del Haiku es el idioma espanol. Yo voto que todo el

Very funny Julio,

However, since this is a web based group, and seeing what an interesting
format the puzzle print took being in the shape of a web, I think we should
continue in that vane and make the haiku be in hexadecimal format... each print can
come with a conversion chart for people to translate their haiku... Unicode
would be good too, but is far more complex...
