Hi all,
Just thought I would let everyone know that I am receiving the
thankyous, donations and appreciation from all of you with great
appreciation from me! I am currently out of town in a festival and the
pesky weather insists on being...pesky. Setting up the wind took my
neighbor's tent and plopped it upside down right on top of mine, bending
one of my poles (thrashing her tent, she cried). Later we had rain,
which flooded the parking lot a little, just enough to force me to
rearrange everything rather quickly so all the art was off the ground
and under cover. I wasn't able to set up on Thursday, so I got up at 4am
yesterday and finished building my little gallery in a calm beautiful
morning.
During the night, I logged on and was showered by Baren messages with
all your good thoughts and more! somehow the rain and wind didn't matter
much anymore. Had a good day Friday and woke up today to another gentle
shower (we are in Arizona! the midst f the southwest DESERT).
No matter, woke up to more delightful greetings from my Baren friends
and am going out for a walk to splash on some puddles and smile at the
clouds.

So thank you all for the good things and for those of you who ask where
I get my energy and drive...well, it's a mutual thing: I get it from you
just as much as you get it from me. Energy and inspiration are like a
water wheel, I think, just need to get the thing going and it gives
back.

Maria, all smiles

Louise,

Your Monkey King is beautiful, and so regal! He is reigning supreme
around here.

BTW Have I mentioned how much fun I am having with hanga and found
wood? I hope to finish my first piece this weekend. I've been
printing and building plates from the throwaways on various scrap heaps
all week. Recycle R Us.

Happy Printing,
Sharri

Sorry about the double post, but I just read the colophon Maria
composed for the Puzzle Project and laughed myself silly at Sarah
Hausers, "Bear-Wren"! I thought that was a pretty funny looking bird,
I just didn't realize how funny! Love that word play, Thanks, Sarah -

Biro-Bidjan was a cruel hoax played on the Jewish people by a mass murdering
Joe Stalin I for one can't see the point of it being shown nowadays. It was
not real when uncle Joe did it and now it is on the ash heap of history.

Greetings to all,

...and especially Maria...the puzzle prints arrived yesterday and they are
wonderful! Ditto on all the praise and thanks to you as well as Barbara.

...and thankyou, Dave, for the link to the Machida group prints...I'm still
waiting for all of them to load.
Could you tell us more about this group.

Now a question..... Is there any history of Japanese printers using
stencils on their otherwise hanga woodblock prints?

Thanks.

I am so impressed with the puzzle print and all of the effort that went into it. What a fabulous idea that was! Great pictures of Maria and Barbara printing it.

Also liked the Machida Hanga Group prints! Thanks Dave for sharing that link.

I've also been reading the archives and archived newsletters, etc. I can't help but feeling like I've missed out on so much, it's like coming to the party late.

But...I am so inspired and I can't wait until the next exchange or group effort :o)

It's been great fun re-aquainting myself with the carving a block, hearing the sound of the ink being rolled out, the smell of the ink, etc. It's great!
I hope to have pictures of my first prints ( in 8 years) done very soon.

I've had the good fortune to find an old Vandercook 14 proof press and look forward to seeing how I can make that work for me. It's a totally hand operated thing &I think it will have a variety of uses.
Now if I can just get the thing home.

Well I just wanted to say again how happy I am to have found this group.

Oh I almost forgot...Could someone give me some advice on honing or sharpening the very tiny (1mm) carving tools? V groove and U gouge. Is there a certain method or a special stone for this?

Thanks again!

Dear Mike,

I have used even softer paper than this, but the trick is to always use
another piece of paper, copy printing paper, glassene or litho (shiny
side up) or something, between your printing paper and the baren then
you have no pilling of the hanga paper at all. If your litho-type
paper gets moist and is not allowing the baren to flow smoothly replace
your litho paper.

Sometimes running your baren through your hair will also regrease it!!!!

This is nice paper, Gonzalo.

Are you ready for more than 300 monkey cards? Matsumura-san has finally
got his annual new year card display on-line, and Sadako has prepared
English index pages for them.

Head over to:
http://www.pippimama.com/art/woodlike/gallery_top_en.html

Below each group of 10 cards you will see arrows right/left (scroll down
to see them), to take you to the next group ... Clicking any thumbnail
will bring up a full-size image of the card.

And for those of you who have never been to those pages before, of
course clicking on another animal sign will take you to hundreds
more ... :-)

Carole asked about the Machida group prints:
> Could you tell us more about this group.

Don't know anything particular about them, sorry. Far as I know, they
are a printmaking circle of a type common all over Japan - they would be
mostly middle-aged and up people, housewives, retired people, etc., and
probably meet once a week, in a public community centre or private
'culture centre'. Groups like this usually hold an exhibition once a
year, and also commonly make calendars for distribution to group members
and sale at the exhibition. It's possible this Machida group might be a
bit more well-organized than most, because Machida is home to a 'hanga'
museum with a world-class collection, and that would presumably boost
local interest.

George up in Akita, or David down in Okazaki may have more local
knowledge of groups like this than I do, and could tell you more about
how they work and what they do ...
