John, I went back to your original link and saw that part of it was not
included in the click-on link so I just cut and pasted the whole thing
and was led directly to your images.

Wow, that jacket of John Center's!!!!!!! What a piece of work that
is! When we see that kind of detail it makes us do a double take at
our own work (meaning me, of course) and say, "yikes, I am not very
skilled at all". I guess we shouldn't compare ourselves because
there's room for all kinds of art in the world, but then you see images
like that you can't help but think there's a genius at work and you
are grateful for it. Thanks for posting the image, both you Johns.
And John Furr, I like the design in your "Mountain Peak". And I wish
my basement were clean as yours for MY Vandercook. It seems a
monumental task to get that room in some kind of shape. We have no
garage, only a cellar.

John Furr I went to this photo site of yours to see JC's jacket and what
else you had and got welcome to yahoo photos but no idea how to view them.
I too would like to see this now famous jacket. If you get it to the Baren
site let us know.
Since I have figured out how to keep my tools sharp but not how to repair
nicks I desperately need Marias invention. I have been carving outside in
what is our community front yard. It is lovely to be by the sea, in the
sunshine but if i drop a tool it lands on cement. So far no nicks thanks to
homage paid to the tool gods. Proofing today, keeping fingers crossed for a
good print.
Oh Malaysia wow, we really are an international group.

The print on leather on the jacket is a corian engraving the material allows
even more detail than maple wood engraving blocks as it does not crumble when
over worked. And the rough side of leather hold the ink and prints well.

According to the Thomas web site their beds are made with 1 1/2" MDF
composite board surfaced with laminate. Is the laminate arobrite?

Thanks,

Myron, call them and ask. I would think though that laminate such as arborite
is too brittle and unable to take the high pressures of printing an etching.
It may be a high pressure laminate such as thin layer of phenolic laminate...
That is what I had been planning to use for the bed of my press... but god is
it expensive when it is thicker.. 4x8 panel is hundreds of dollars 3/4" thick.

I have started to upload the images to AOL instead of yahoo... aol works but
is slower.. and some images the resolution has been lowered by them... anyway
the link is here... I am adding some press images later, but John's jacket
engraving is there now.

Gayatri,

PrintArts Northwest has a member living in Jakarta - would that be
close enough to be of any help? He might possibly know of other
opportunities/printmakers in that part of the world. If you want his
address let me know and I will get it for you.

Cheers,

Mine is a Patrick Press, but I presume Thomas is continuing in the same
fashion. The top of mine is the same material as a kitchen counter top. You
could go to any kitchen counter top place and have them cut you one to size
with whatever color or brand of surface you like. So if I find I need a bed
longer than 36 inches, I can just have a longer one made. Or you could
replace the bed with whatever material you like.

For specific details, I would email Mr. Thomas.

Cheers ..... Charles

That was my impression, but according to Charles it may be possible. As
for something with greater strength--I've located a 4x8 piece of Arboron--1
inch thick Arborite here in Winnipeg: $490.00. Apparently it's the
successor to Benelux, which I believe is what my press bed is made
of. However, I was told you can't drill into its edge, whereas with the
Benelux you could.

Perhaps this stuff is what you are referring to as phenolic laminate, since
it is made under high pressure.

Hi Myron,

Phenolic panels have many trade names, but they are all phenolic resins and
some laminate material, either paper or canvas or fibermesh and all are made
under very high pressures and temperatures. Depending on the manufacturer and
the internal laminate material and thickness used you may or may not be able to
edge drill.. There are many grades of the panels too..

I am surprised that plain countertop laminate material is used.. I will try a
test piece for a bed before spending money on a more expensive material, and
then press a sharp edged plate on it under as much pressure as I can create to
test it... heck two countertop scraps glued back to back can be had for free
to test.. something like a couple of sink cut outs... large enough to print a
8x12 plate maybe...

Speaking of sink cut outs... I got a corian on for free plus some small
strips to use in engraving... those curious to try it other materials should see if
their local counter installers will give them free scraps to test.
