I'd recommend either the type 'C' (finer and easier running) or the new
Korokoro (which I am ordering one of right now!) which looks good to me for
$127 instead of $218, but I haven't tried this one (the type 'C' is a good
tool and works very well, though it's much coarser (more likely to produce
baren-suji) than the 13 cm Murasaki medium for $117 (but you'll have to
replace covers on the Murasaki regularly, I'm afraid)...

Steve and all,
This is a good question...can everyone on the baren send me their experience with the various papers and I will compile a list for all about these papers and how you like them?
I have not used any except the Yamaguchi paper and it is a bit spendy to learn on, although Dave would disagree, feeling that you need to use the best in order to really learn. I have used Masa, Mulberry, hosho and of course the Yamaguchi paper. The Masa is marginal but works, the mulberry is fair, the hosho if better, the Yamaguchi is great.
Lets get more info in here for those starting out. I know MIke has used lots of different papers, but I failed to keep a post he made a few months ago. I promise to compile a good little cheat sheet here for anyone who wants it. Send me info.....

Try "New Hosho" (#23 at http://www.barenforum.org/mall/products/paper.php )
It's a decent paper and relatively inexpensive at $8.25 for approximately 6
square foot sheet (2' x 3')... Good for printing and cheap enough for
practice, I think.

OK, here goes the dumb question. I have done hanga and worked on one at the
summit. But i did not bring my notes on setting up registration with me
and well to be honest i have not been carving. I have been decorating and
painting! So now I have 2 watercolors to choose from and some wood here.
The enclyclopedia is grand but it does not say how much space I need for my
kento. So do i leave about a quarter inch all around and than another inch
at the bottom for the center registration area that is slanted toward the
design? How much space should I leave around the design so I do not have
the paper getting mucky around the design and yet hold it from the
background.

Maria sounds like you have a lot of invitations. Mine did not include a
bedroom because I am not sure our house will be finished. But my studio has
a wonderful view - the largerst fresh water estuary on the pacific
coastline. We also have the pacific ocean a mile away and you will get to
view the mighty columbia river if you come to my peninsula hide out. I have
a press and ink and plenty of scenery to offer. I am in Washington, but it
will not be a straight shot up to BC from here, but the back roads offer
scenery of their own.

Barbara,

That's a great idea you have. It's very difficult to choose from so many
different available papers.

One problem I find is the paper names. I found a supplier of japanese papers
in England and some of the names in their list match those listed in Baren
Mall but the prices are very different. Some times much more expensive and
sometimes cheaper. So much so that I can't believe that they refer to the same
paper. Also there are similar looking names. For example Kojo and Koju. Are
they the same?

Wowwieee!!!

Thank you all who sent invitations in response to my road-trip ditty. I
am keeping all of them in a special folder and will give some thought to
my route. As for dates, I don't have any yet, all depends on soooo many
things. But the trip is set and the idea is taking shape. My thougths is
that I can bring blocks and paper and do some sort of a "sense of
(printmaker's) place" theme piece with every one of you in a
collaborative arrangement. Then I would bind all the prints in a book
and it would be like a diary of the trip to be sent to each participant
after the trip is over. Cool, huh?

Anyhow, thanks for the warm invites! So far it looks like quite a
trip...if I hit all the places I'd be on the road for months :-)

Sorry it took me so long to reply - I didn't get to check email this weekend. In my studio, priming my birch ply has the exact same meaning as in house decorating --- because I use the same primer for both! I guess the only difference is that I sand the primer down and sometimes do more than one coat. I used to use gesso until I realized that there was no difference in the results and the cost was more.

Hey Maria,

When you say west keep Washington in mind .... would be nice to meet you.
Also think about the Pacific Northwest Fair.... it's in Bellevue, Wa and the
jurying is, I believe, sometime next month. Used to be a great show.... and
you could use our house as a base.
