Oh, wow...just what we need. Another place to find exchanges. :-)) Brad, I had visited there in the past and didn't see much activity. I'll take another look Cheers Ray ------------------------------ From: Gayle Wohlken Date: Thu, 11 Mar 1999 09:03:10 -0500 Subject: [Baren 3501] Re: Baren Digest V6 #483 Ray said, > Shrinkage is a natural effect of wood aging. and > But why take the chance? > After reading Dave's excellent lesson, I for one would certainly follow his advice. I finally did follow his advice, Ray. I realized after I wrote that message, it would be foolish not to. Gayle ------------------------------ From: "Jeanne N. Too bad it does not have a Dave Bull running it!! By the way, I am from Spokane, Wa. Write me on my Web Page. Jeanne ------------------------------ From: "Ray Esposito" Date: Thu, 11 Mar 1999 11:10:12 -0500 Subject: [Baren 3503] press My press has been shipped. The next step was to buy blankets. I went to the catalogs and after some research found, to my surprise, that the best prices were from Takach. I was surprised since Takach presses are among the most expensive available. A set of three cost $123. If anyone knows of a cheaper source let us know. I hope the press and blankets arrive at the same time. Is it my fault you live on the other side of the _planet_? ;-) *** I had an unexpected joy awaiting me at work the other day. The Philadelphia Museum of Art is running an exhibition at present devoted to modernist artist Earl Horter and his collection (I hadn't actually heard of him before, but he seems to have been a big deal). In conjunction with that exhibit, we're running a small show of his students' work at the Fleisher Art Memorial. Horter taught there briefly when Fleisher was still known as the Graphic Sketch Club. The whole point to this rambling introduction is that included in this little show are two wonderful woodcuts by Horter's more well-known student, Jacob Landau. The two beauties on display are "Status Quo Ante" and "Fire Bugs", both from the mid 1950's. Great! The latter seems to have been printed from a joined block, as there is a strange little "jump" in the texture at the top. Very bold cutting and excellent design in good old black and white. Ah, the joy of even being able to get close enough see his brayer marks! By the by, Fleisher has a website now at http://www.fleisher.org if you'd care to have a peek at the institution itself. I'm a newbie whose been hiding in the wings waiting for a chance to jump in. James, you are from my hometown, Philadelphia. I took several classes at Fleisher. I thought that Fleisher had closed down for lack of funds. How long is the show at the Museum? BTW I am now living in Santa Fe, NM. Ray, What press did you buy? Was it the one mentioned in a previous post - from Comox or Courtney on Vancouver Island? I missed the beginning of this.... It cost just $985 due to the exchange rate and Dan Patrick's already low prices. That is the size I wanted but it looked like it would be too large to get through a doorway. What did you pay for shipping, crateing and brokerage fee? Thanks for being first! Bea ------------------------------ From: "Ray Esposito" Date: Thu, 11 Mar 1999 21:28:08 -0500 Subject: [Baren 3513] Re: press I have no idea about the doorway but I will cross that bridge when I get to it. I have a number of options. Presses are shipped to the nearest bonded warehouse. In my case that is Baltimore. The cost is $273. I will have to pay to ship it to Snow Hill. I can go pick it up but I would have to rent a pickup and don't want to bother with the hassle. Creating was $100CN which is paid to Patrick Designs when you buy the press. There is no trariff. I believe there are minimal brokerage fees paid to the shipper. I might add that I paid an extra $100CN to have them install micro gauges. I think it is a foolish savings not to have them. Yes, it's the moment you've all been waiting for! My copy of the exchange folio arrived earlier this afternoon - opened and re-taped by the Japanese customs officers, who were no doubt looking for 'dirty' prints! I of course got right to work with the scanner, and can now report that it's all done and up there ready for your perusal. http://www.woodblock.com will give you a link directly to it. I should mention that the slide show, with all those prints in it, may be a bit heavy on the memory use. If you have problems, then just view the prints by clicking on each person's name instead.
