The pronunciation is 'bah kay', and the term translates simply as 'printing brush'. The handles are a single piece of wood or bamboo, split and opened up to hold the bundle of tied hair.

These brushes are fairly small, and not suitable for large wide areas. Use them for those 'spot' colour areas in your prints.

We have three types available, listed here in order of increasing quality (and cost).

These first type are excellent value - the hair is well-softened, and they are ready to use just as you receive them.

The second type is a slightly different style - the handles are made from split bamboo, and the insides are stiff pig bristles, wrapped in a slice of cherry bark.

Surikomi Hanga Bake

The third type are professional brushes made from top quality horse hair held in lacquered wooden handles. The hair is finished on sharkskin, and the brushes are ready to use.
