Print Title: As a drunken bee
Paper Dimension: 13 x 6.5 inches
Image Dimension: 11 x 5 inches
Block: 8 cherrywood
Pigment or Ink: Akua-Kolor
Paper: Owara
Edition: 100
Comments: The Mojave Willow needs bees to pollinate, consequently the willow bloom has an attractive \"runway\" in the form of yellow stripes leading straight into the pollen rich flower center. I watch the bees head straight into the feast and wallow in the powedery yellow pollen until they are completely covered. Some seem to just sit and stay awhile, as if they were too drunk to fly.

Comments: I joined this exchange because it was the incentive I needed to stop dancing around woodcuts and begin learning the moku hanga technique. The experienced woodcut artist will see all of the common beginner\'s mistakes; too much ink, moisture, paste, not enough ink, water, paste, registration slip ups, stray bits of colour and the list goes on. But for me what I did learn outweighs my mistakes: bigger barens do not make for better printing, consistency is important whether it is in the efficiency of your movements, how you have your work space set up or keeping your paper damp and not too damp) and the greatest lesson of all, allowing enough time for each step in the process. Enough time to proof each plate, enough time to proof colours and enough time to print.
The technique got under my skin and I see a future for it into my printmaking.

Print Title: A BRANCH OF DAMSON PLUMS
Paper Dimension: 14.5 CM X 33 CM
Image Dimension: 12 CM X 30 CM
Block: Shina Ply (2 blocks)
Pigment or Ink: Sennelier Inks with Rice Paste
Paper: Mura Udabam, Kizuki Kozo &nYaki Gampi (Japanese Paper Place Warehouse names)
Edition: Open edition
Comments: This image is from a sketch I did last year in the UK of a freshly picked branch of Damsons from a friend\'s tree.
It\'s a rather hybrid kind of technique as it is \'moku hanga\'as designated -using 2 blocks and baren printed but combined with reduction print- black line was final layer some of which had to be rolled rather than brushed on.

Comments: Bhumisparsha (touching the Earth mudra) was Buddha Shakyamuni\'s gesture to the Earth as he called upon her to witness his awakening. The meaning of this gesture is debatable, but certainly it grounds Buddha\'s teachings in the \"realness\" of the Earth and the notion of interdependence with all things and beings.

I think in terms of lines and space but, on this project, tried to bring my awareness to the interaction of color. As is traditional, Buddha\'s hand is golden and his robes scarlet. Earth, the water planet, is blue and green. I learned so much from working on this print. My technique has a long way to go, but I felt great joy in bringing to realization this colorful image from my mind.

Edition: Baren 54 edition of 19 + 1st edition of 12 + 2 a/p to models + 3 badly smudged
Comments: Image is of Madeline Cass and Kit Landwehr. I designed 18 blocks cut by CNC router from 4x4x0.5 inch birch plywood. I managed to ruin block 13 by dragging the router through the image, so it wasn\'t printed and who can tell, anyway? First eight or nine blocks were brushed up with dry graphite pigment in rice paste. Channel Black pigment suspension from Guerra Paint and Pigment was added to deepen subsequent printings.

Print Title: Revenge of the Sugar Donuts Paper Dimension: 5.7\" x 13\"
Image Dimension: 5.25\" x 12.5\"
Block: 1 cherry, 4 shina plywood blocks
Pigment or Ink: Daniel Smith watercolor pigment; marble dust
Paper: Kihada/Echizen Kozo/Kizuki kozo (mixed handmade Japanese papers)
Edition: E.V. 22/4 AP
Comments: They came in groups of 6 and 12 and it would be a long time before the events of that day would be forgotten....

The marble dust was added by printing a sticky mix of gum arabic/paste onto the block and transferring it to the paper by printing lightly with the baren. I then dusted on very finely ground calcium carbonate through a fine seive and then dusted it off.
Mixed results with the thinner papers holding more glue on the surface and better adhesion of the heavy dust; The thicker papers absorbed too much glue and the dust seems to be too-loosely attached. I\'ll have to keep experimenting. As I wanted a little better adhesion and coverage.

Block: Poplar
Pigment or Ink: Caligo Safe Wash
Paper: Mulberry
Edition: 26
Comments: This image is from a line drawing of my cat muse Big Guy sunning in the garden. The rest is from my inner garden. I have been looking at Naoko Matsubara images and enjoying her layering of color. I used four blocks, three with one color and the final block with a blend roll. I usually work on shina plywood when doing woodcut and working on a plank was a little different but I found it quite enjoyable. I had to re-cut the cat and bird detail as I had some warping of the block during proofing- surprising and frustraiting but it allowed me to edit the image a little. Layering of the color was fun and gave the static images some nice movement.

Comments: This was my first moku hanga experience which might be obvious by looking at my prints. At times the ink, paste and water combined with inexperience and impatience made for sheer horror as well as hysterical comedy. Despite difficulty at every turn it was fun to experiment with the process. The subject of my woodcut is my dear dog, Biscuit. When I began the process of cutting my blocks he was suffering from an ailment that seemed potentially fatal and so was very much on my mind. In my design I positioned him on a bed of flowers while in real life he convalesced on a wood blanket by the woodstove. As the weeks (and months) have passed he has not only recuperated but has also been immortalized in beginner moku hanga style.
