This print was an experiment in many different ways. I had never printed anything on black paper before and wanted to give it a try. A print of Calla Lily seemed like a good choice. The paper is Arches Cover in black, which I would not use again for this sort of project, as the surface texture was much too rough. The paper was printed dry. For inks, I used water based block printing ink, oil based block printing ink, clear etching medium, and clear acrylic medium, all with the addition of pigment dispersions from Guerra. The pigment dispersions worked very well. The technique was a combination of wood block printing and stencilling, using a pin registration for both. In some cases the ink was applied directly to the block and printed, while in some cases the ink was stencilled onto the block and then printed; but in other cases the ink was stencilled directly onto the print. Stencilling was done using both roller and dauber techniques. In all, each print received 15 separate applications of ink.
