Artist's comments ...

My print tells the story of Raven, freeing the moon and stars up through the smokehole of the house where they were kept in a box, thus lighting the night sky for the first time.

Dale DeArmond specialized in black & white woodblock and wood etchings, and produced a large collection illustrating the native mythology of Alaska. My first class in woodblock was taken in Sitka, Alaska, where Dale graciously mentored many young artists after her retirement to the Pioneer's Home there. This print is a tribute to her style and study, while the subject is dedicated to my friend and neighbor, the artist Carole Baker, who has always generously shared tools and provided encouragement to light my way.
