Artist's comments ...

There was a considerable thread on Baren about printing wood grain. When renovating my house, I found several old planks that were interesting. One was cedar, which I printed for exchange 14. The other was pine, which I printed for 14a. The pine board had a remarkably complete oriental face in it, which I really liked. I only had to do a little carving to bring out the mouth and a little of the detail around the eyes. I used a hand wire brush to bring out the grain ... found a power brush just ground away the surface. The board was very soft and uneven, and the surface tended to compress in various ways as I printed. Because of old planer marks and other imperfections, it was almost impossible to make the printing smooth and without lines.
