This is a new site still under construction, but the company is 'real'!

Barry Rushton, founder of Hawthorn Printmakers writes (March, 2007):
"Hawthorn is a small family owned and run business that we started two years ago. For the past 35 years I have worked in the ink industry as an employee.3 years ago I was approached by a local University that wanted an etching ink that students could wipe with ease and that had little waste ( ie no skin) The useage was small so it was not considered viable by the company that i worked at . So i thought that I'd have a go at making what they wanted yet were unable to get from other sources. After they had passed some to other Universities and printmakers i was getting requests from all over. Like so many businesses we were on our way almost by accident.

"All the inks are made by ourselves to our own formulea and are different than what I have seen supplied elsewhere, most of our inks will not skin in the tin for many years yet are made to dry when they are printed. With every order for ink we get requests for other products such as rollers and chemicals,so we have started to supply some these as well but our first product will always be inks.

"I must admit since starting Hawthorn I've enjoyed every minute of it.
Meeting artists and talking to them about what they are trying to acheive and finding that you can help with the inks has given me a great deal of satisfaction.

"Our intention is to supply quality products that answer the needs of all Printmakers whether they be Professional or amateur, and to enjoy ourselves whilst doing it. Which means that we have to really look after all our customers and have a proper returns policy as well."

Mark Mason writes:
"They're a good UK supplier of Japanese Paper, brushes, knives and gouges, woodblocks and a few other odds and ends like pre-mixed rice paste. We have very few UK stockists of Woodblock supplies. They stock Magnolia blocks and 5mm ply, and they've just started to stock Birch ply in a range of sizes. The prices look OK too, as the largest woodblock costs around £10 and could be cut up into smaller blocks. They've expanded their range of Japanese paper. They are a really nice company, and very friendly. I have ordered things from them in the past including a very nice left-handed Hangito (from the same makers as are available from top class Baren Mall) and a pad of Hosho."
