Mike Lyon & Art Chicago 2007

LyonMikeApril2007.jpg

This past Sunday I attended Art Chicago 2007 . The show makes it's home at Chicago's famous Merchandise Mart and is truly an international event with over 30 participating fine Art galleries from Europe, Canada and Asia and over 100 American galleries. Under the umbrella of "Artropolis" it was one of several Art shows running concurrently in one location. So much to see and so little time !

It was great to meet up again with Mike Lyon and his wife Linda who flew in from Kansas City for the show and visit with their son Andy. Sherry Leedy Contemporary Art Gallery from Kansas City which represents Mike brought along two of his more recent (and very large !) pen and ink drawings ("Rick" and "Anthony").

My wife Maria and I met up with the Lyons and after a most needed lunch we had a great time visiting the galleries and talking shop. Mike was a real trooper getting around with little problem just days after getting his cast removed (torn achilles tendon surgery !). I for one had trouble keeping up with him !

This was quite an upscale show with price tags to match...such prices ! A few of the works we inquired about were in the $50,000 to $250,000 range. Among my favorite artists on display were works by Chuck Close, Andy Warhol, Alex Katz, Wilfredo Lam (Cuban master), Colombian Fernando Botero and of course our very own Mike Lyon.

Sarah Hauser Exhibition May 1 - 31

"99¢ Store Miracles”
New Works on Paper by Sarah Hauser

Manhattan Graphics Center
481 Washington Street
between Canal and Spring Street
New York, NY 10013
(212) 219-8783

Dates of Exhibition: May 1 - 31, 2007
Reception: Sat. May 5, 6-8pm
Hours: Tues-Friday 10am-10pm
Saturday and Sunday, 10am-6pm

As a child, I always loved the 5 and 10¢ stores and....

with each trip would wonder what little treasure I would find there. That fascination has continued through the years, and has evolved into my current series of works on paper, “99¢ Store Miracles”. The inspiration and “models” for these works are toys which I purchased at 99¢ stores. I set them up in ever-changing miniature landscapes in my studio.

I work with a variety of media, constantly finding new ways to combine them. For this exhibition, I have been working with printmaking and drawing media in combination with gouache, inks and metallic paints.

Best wishes
Sarah Hauser

IMPACT IV

This barely fits in the category of Exhibitions, but I can't figure where else to list it.

As many of you know, we just returned about a week ago fron=m the IMPACT conference in Bertlin and Poznan, Poland. The show was great in so many ways. We had a chance to talk with numerous artists, including April Vollmer, from places like Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, Germany, Great Brtitain, South Africa, and of course, the U.S.

The turnout was good, the comraderie was great, there were a few ideas for new products, and we got a ton of pictures. I just can't figure out how to post them here. Check out my blog for updates. I'll try to get back to a regular piece now that things have settled back to normal again.

Continuing Maria's Project Puzzle Info

Here is more information about the Puzzle Project. The two sheets of prints are now in the NYC 5th Ave. Public Library Print Room,
The first photo shows information to the left, quotes from David Bull and Maria. Below the prints are the statements made by the printers whose prints are on the bottom row. The colored string connects the statements to the corresponding print.
The second photo shows a lady who was very interested in reading everything. She appreciated and learned a lot she told me.

Maria's Puzzle Project on Exhibit

Maria's Puzzle Project has been on exibit at the Donnell Library Center, W. 53 St , Manhattan, July 16-29. It includes the prints of 44 Baren participants. The theme was "What is Baren"
It was part of my 6 panel show "Too Advanced for Connecticut II". That provocative title was a jokingly made by a museum curator.
The first day of the exhibit two Asian ladies were seen enjoying and closely examining the prints, commenting to each other. I joined them and we had a Q&A. One of them said of Frank Trueba's print, "That's my name in Japanese" That was a nice beginning to the exhibit.

Barbara Goes to Chicago

This is going to be so much fun...I am going to try to do a little travelog of my trip to Chicago. I can't wait to see the windy city and all that midwest art work. Also I hope my own exhibit will be successful and I will have sales. After all, that's how we judge ourselves, ultimately. Even if we say it doesn't matter, it does. So stay posted. I leave the 6th for my big trip and will let you all know how it goes..and I love the idea of being able to post photos.
