Re. mold... I am wondering if I wasn't paying attention when I took classes on Moku Hanga. Are you supposed to keep the paper wet until you are done with the print? After I print one color, or as many as I am doing at one time, I put my prints in between sheets of blotter paper and weigh the stack down with a big heavy linoleum block I've never finished carving. When I want to print again, I re-wet the paper. Needless to say, I've never had any problems with mold.

Anything with acetone as an ingredient.



Goof Off, Goo-gone and other citrus removers, nail polish remover, of course
acetone straight up. Ventilate well, do it outside and wear gloves.

i bought some new japanese carving tools last summer
the literature enclosed with them said that
if one stropped enough
one might never have to sharpen the tool

I'm responding to the questions a while back about what is Moku Hanga. I went
back in to my old emails (the magic of the internet) and found one from August
1999 that I wrote for the Baren after taking an Elderhostle class from April
Volmer. I was an oily wood cutter before this experience and have only used
water base since.I keep learning everytime I do a print. Here's the email I
sent with my writeup on the difference between oily and water.

To Georga: Try nail varnish remover and also try methylated spirits the blue coloured
stuff. I seem to remember that one of those worked but cant remember which.

I used to draw with permanent marker, paint, anything to get the design on, if I wanted to get rid of it, I would put the lino in a sink and scrub it with a fine steel wool pad, I liked the ones with some pink soap impregnated in the steel wool. I would then dry it out in the sun completely, let the hession get a bit of sun as well. Anyhow in my experience no harm comes of the lino and infact it saves the need to sand those odd little bumps off. Anyhow that is what I used to do. Another thing you can do is just paint a thin layer of water soluble paint, grey, black, white, whatever and draw your design onto that. I always scrub the paint off, in the manner described above after the cutting is done.

Unfortunately I have not been doing much work of late..................
