Hi Sue,

Welcome to Baren Forum! Regarding letting the paper dry between moku hanga printing sessions, if I know that it will be several days before I can print again I find no problems with letting the paper dry and re-wetting when I'm ready to resume printing. If I'll be printing again in a day or two, though, it's fine to keep the paper damp under plastic. I also sometimes let the paper dry mid-way through the printing just to check on color balance, as colors tend to lighten when the paper dries.

best,
Annie

The Birch was and may still be an endangered specie so never nudge the bark off. Wait till it falls or the tree can be injured..

Larry,
I have used "paper" birch bark several times over the years, not for printing, but for pen & ink drawings and calligraphy pieces. They have held up well. I have usually stabilized the bark on a stiff background matrix of some kind, depending on the size. The smaller pieces most often don't require stabilizing. I also use the bark as outer covers for my handmade books. This is usually done by laying out strips of bark, similar to laying out strip of papyrus, but only going one direction. It is such a wonderful texture, almost like leather but not quite, and makes each book or other article it is used for a wonderful tactile experience as well as a unique visual one.

i should have said that Joseph Tomah
ENGRAVED on the brown side of birch bark not "etched"
he just drew with a pointed object
and also that
these wonderful drawings on bark
can be seen at the ABBE MUSEUM- Bar Harbor
and the Hudson Museum- Orono
and probably their websites

my plans for what happens to my woodcuts when i depart
are to donate complete sets to the Univ of Maine Machias Art Galleries
'and to the Womens Art Museum at Rutgers
beyond that i will leave the blocks and piles of prints
to my son and daughter
who will have the right to sell, donate, or even print "re-strkes" if they choose.
that's is why i always carve my name into the block
so that a restrke can be SIB
or "signed in the block"

i have earned a meager living from my art
with lots of supplementation from other sources
but i think that my children and grand children
CAN reap more benefit from it
and it is really all i have to "leave them"
the art will live on
the energy of my hands carving...

Gillyin in Machias Maine USA

my large and growing collection of BAREN EXCHANGES
i will most likely donate to the UMM art Galleries also
where there is also one of the few BOOK ARTS PROGRAMS in the country

it's too bad art is not valued in our culture
for the very essence of "making things with ones hands"
or realizing that drawing should come BEFORE reading
in the order of things at "school"

we really cant expect huge change in these areas
unless we are doing it ourselves

Subject: [Baren 44969] Exchange 50 finally arrives in Italy
Send Message: To this poster

Hi all.

My little package finally arrived in Italy just a few days ago after 3 weeks of being a "lost package"....we opened it this afternoon as part of a tea and cake and art afternoon.
I had a nice little group of some family, neighbors and artist friends and we set up all the prints on a table in an adjacent room and looked them over after tea and gingerbread.

I had a few old blocks (including those from my beetle/grub print) and was able to explain the techniques to those present and it was a great format for showing art to those not familiar with original prints.

Thanks to all for a great effort--the quality overall was really excellent and the variety in color, design, techniques, paper and content was as varied as it was interesting.
Great to have some engravings (thanks Andy) as well as oil and moku hanga based woodcuts and linoleum prints as well as I thought maybe some MDF?
Hopefully will eventually see all the artist's notes from the colophon as I couldn't be certain of a few.

Was great being part of this print exchange and I was reminded again how special is this forum as well as the fringe benefits of being able to participate in an exchange of ideas and even original art with people from all over the world.

Thanks Baren(ers).
Sincerely,

Andrew Stone

Julio - how did you get your address to format correctly?

And Syd signed up but didn't leave an address.

I'm working on my dragon as we speak! I hope to send it out into the world
closer to the actual New Year, this year.

Enjoying every minute,

Hello,

I've been lurking on this forum for a few months now and think it is time
to introduce myself.
Hi I'm Maciej and I live in Melbourne, Australia.
I've been making art for about 10 years now but have recently fallen into
serious love with printmaking.

I'm glad this community exists and appreciate all the things I can learn
here. I am amazed at the level of talent I see on everybodies websites and
this really inspires me and pushes me to be better at making art. So thanks

I wish everyone would put their name in the address box because then it
becomes a label without having to do anything to it. I put my name in so
Bareners just need to print my label. It's not easy to put other peoples
name in the box afterwards. Bea Gold
