Hi everyone,

One reason I sent the weird email to our list was to give everyone a
heads up that this is happening. I did not go to any of the links
given, figured they were probably passing on a virus. Just be aware,
if it looks odd use your delete button. I have a Mac and gmail and
rarely get spam. You can reset your spam filters, I believe, as
another way of keeping them OUT.

As has been requested by the leading group, I am slowly but surely removing
the comments forms from the gallery pages.

In the meantime, the email list that allows the website's server to send
email to a "listed" person has been removed. Upshot is that even the forms
that are still up on the website do not work, I just tested several and the
website just shoots an error message. May the spammers get showered with
errors.

Beginning with Exchange 40-something I also (by request) ceased publishing
the emails of participants on exchange pages so the auto-bots could not
gather email addresses from the Baren website. Even though the functionality
of the older exchange forms has been removed, the email addresses are still
on the website so until I pluck them, the spam-bots can gather emails.

Just FYI, I had to get rid of one of my old email addresses
maria@mariarango.com due to about 500+ spam messages per DAY. I killed poor
maria@mariarango.com. And another piece of trivia, these spammers aren't
"people" in a certain location sitting at their computer doing their stupid
deeds; some of these spammers are automatic scripts sent from hijacked
computers designed to gather published emails or use web-forms to send
gazillions of spam messages to all of us annoyed recipients. The way of the
web.

On a positive note, spam filters have gotten better with age. I personally
never get any of those through g-mail until someone replies to the message
on Baren and quotes the spam text.

Anyhow, a few more days and all those pesky forms will be gone. I must say I
will miss the comments but maybe we can comment on prints on the forum?
Would be nice to get feedback as a whole on the exchange prints, even
general comments. I think we're making some nice prints as a group and am
immensely proud of my vast collection.

Carry on, brave printmakers!!!

Maria

Maria... Thanks so much for doing this. I will be so happy NOT to have to delete so much. We need to award you a gold star or something!

Oh one more thing, I would suggest that those of us who like feedback on our
prints and to avoid having the gallery pages be "dead ends" as far as the
whole "surfing" concept goes, how about allowing participants who wish to do
so include a link to websites, blogs, facebook pages, and the like? Maybe
everything except direct links to shop pages?

I know in the past we have tried to keep people withIN the Barenforum
website but really the web has evolved.

What would the leading group think of letting people put a link within the
comments section when submitting print info?

What say everyone? Yeah? Nah? Don't rock the boat? Let sleeping dogs lie?

Just sayin'

Maria

I'm good with that... one link to either website or blog or facebook. Since the links aren't set up the same as email addresses the spam will be minimal.

There could also be a list of participants with email addresses or links sent out with the prints (I haven't done a print exchange yet, so maybe there already is.) That wouldn't allow nonparticipants a way to contact participants, but it would make it easy within the exchange group.

I'd be in favor if including a contact link. I have a blog and so far I've been able to handle any spam. I wouldn't mind including that addy with any prints. I'm sorry it's become such a problem on the baren exchange pages, as I send people there to see all our lovely work on occasion and don't want to frustrate anyone who wants to make a comment.
