Subject: [Baren 44275] Exchange 50 - Please RSVP
Send Message: To this poster

Dear Baren Exchange 50 participants:

In Mondays email from Gayle she indicated that HALF of us have not confirmed
participation with her! This is a highly annoying number of maybe's for
those of us who have cut 102 sheets of paper and printed or are in the
process of printing 102 woodcuts! They may be small prints but it still
takes the same amount of set-up, printing time and clean up as 100 Oban
size...And I will be very upset if I find out after the fact that I could
have done half as much work in half the number of days...as I'm sure my
fellow exchangers will be too!

Please make sure you get back to Gayle and let her know if you are still
sending 102 - 3.5"x2.5" relief prints. This is a large number of artworks
for your fellow bareners to print and for Gayle to collate. Your thoughtful
RSVP will assist greatly:

1. The Wait listers will know if they need to get printing or not.
2. The other participants will know how many prints to mail out...
3. Gayle will know how many piles to sort the prints into

Please be considerate of those of us who are still working on and/or about
to mail our prints and let Gayle know that you are either working on the
prints and they will absolutely, positively and definitely be mailed or if
sadly you need to gracefully bow out.

If you don't remember if you confirmed with Gayle then confirm
anyway...better to say it twice than not at all...and we will be a great
deal more forgiving if back out now than if you do so at the 11th hour...

Thank you for your immediate reply to Gayle!

Sincerely,
Patti Phare-Camp

I received some confirmations after I sent out the last email, but I'm still short 22 people's confirmations. Thank you Patty for encouraging that final group of participants to respond. I have an email waiting to go out to those 22 if I don't hear from them by October 1. :-)

I've had two drop outs and have contacted the next in line to see if they are still interested. The first one is busily working, and I'm waiting to hear from the second one. There's still a third in the wings. Come on, people -- are you "In"?

Send Message: To this poster

Hi All,
Quick question I was given what appeared to be birch veneer plywood. Ive used hardwood veneered plywood for prints before but when I started carving this it was super brittle and chipped like crazy! On closer inspection it seems that the birch layer is much less than 1mm thickhas anyone seen plywood like this? Is it possible to use, say by oiling it? Or am I wasting my time even trying?
Thanks for any thoughts!

Lee,

I have use birch plywood numerous times. The issue is there are various quality
levels of plywood. There are those that are literally plays of solid wood
laminated and then there are some with "fillers" in some of the middle layers.
The best I have seen has solid plies around 2mm thick. The cheaper stuff
has outer "finished" layer of a 1/32" veneer- not very usable for prints..

The draw back with this plywood is that the glue used damages you tools...
You are having to sharpen them very often.

I am big on Basswood boards.... I can get them 12 to 16 inch wide.... If I need wider I glue them together....
Be careful that the glue line does not happen in a clear or smooth area (sky) of the image.

I also put a spline along the edge to prevent warping.

It may be that you've got what sells at Home Depot as a cabinet plywood', about $27 vs. almost $50 for birch.

I tried this for a print recently and each attempt failed in the details. The wood had a darker glue and despite three coats of 2lb shellac, was prone to break- outs and splinters.

It also looked like it may have had layers of poplar in its' construction.

Personally, I think it's a waste of time, if you are carving fine detail. Few things are as irksome as getting 95% through a woodcut and having it fail because the block won't allow the tiny but all so important detail!

By-the-way, I was able to carve the same design into regular, shellacked birch plywood in a matter of hours, with no misadventures in wood at all.

I would not carve it...Birch is hard enough to carve with all its splintering...frustration for sure. Maybe use it for a background and carve it with some type of electric dremel tool.

Subject: Senshafuda series ... non-update!
Posted by: Dave Bull

I mentioned in the previous post that I wouldn't be posting again for a couple of weeks, as I'm heading over to Vancouver for a family visit, but there is another update that needs to be done first ...

A number of collectors have written asking about the progress of the Summer Senshafuda set ... is it still on the rails?

Well ... yes and no. After the re-carving was done, I told you back on September 8th that Tetsui-san had the re-done blocks in hand, along with my new sample, and was ready to get going. He knew about my schedule - I'm leaving on the 30th - and the idea was to get the prints to me before I left, so that I could arrange for Yasui-san to get trimming and packaging.

I called him up on Monday, but he wasn't there; his father said that he was out on a music job. I called back the next day, and managed to catch him. He hasn't started yet.

I had also been repeatedly calling and writing emails to illustrator Seki-san, to try and get the Autumn set moving forward. She sent me the first roughs in the first week of September, but they weren't suitable at all, and I had asked her to try again. The new batch arrived on Sunday evening. They have some promise, but I have a number of things that I'd like to talk with her about in person (email is too difficult), so wrote to her to . . .

Subject: Woodblock Print: On the Outside (Sheep)

Title: On the Outside (sheep)
Paper: Magnani Pescia, 14" x 18"
Image Size: 12" x 16"
Block: Shina--4 blocks
Ink: Akua Intaglio
Edition size: 50

This my second woodblock print for the Women's Invitational Exhibition (September 17th - October 30th) at Traillworks in Newton, NJ, also inspired by Hope Throws Her Heart Away by Susan Goodell.

First, I carved the key block first (burnt umber), inked it, and transferred the print to three other blocks to use as a guide for carving.

These are the carved blocks before I applied the color inks.
