I've been thinking a lot about black versus color in art and in woodblock
printing, .
I do both.
The composition dictates the treatment .In my experience, there is no
difference in the acceptance or marketing .

I do almost all my work in colour. Every now and then I think that I
ought to 'simplify' and use just one block. Except that this does not
at all simplify anything. It seems to me much harder to get a feeling
of depth and subtlety and nuance in black and white (unless you are
someone like Albrecht Durer).

Wow, this is an interesting thread on use of black and white vs color.
Yesterday there were comments on the person using black and white
being linear. I never thought of myself as a linear artist until a
girl friend came over to see me and my work. She commented that my
work seemed very linear, even when I use shapes. (She had taken a lot
of art classes in college.)

But, when I studied art I was a painting major, we certainly used
color a lot. The interesting thing about that was when our basic
design prof gave the assignment to create a design using equal value
color. She had said at the beginning of the year that if she saw a
piece that she deemed special that she would keep it. She kept mine.
At that moment I realized I do equal value color easily. I have never
been value oriented and have to work at it in my drawings. So, perhaps
it is not color we do not see as well but value?

Another thing, when studying painting I was taught NOT TO BUY BLACK
PAINT IN A TUBE. We were taught to always mix our blacks. So yes there
is color in black. There is such a thing as a warm black and a cool
black. I do buy black printmaking inks. Printmaking is a totally
different medium than oil or watercolor painting.

I agree, I do like the crisp look of a one color print. When viewing
them you look more at the LINES and details. The human mind is indeed
an amazing thing giving each of us a distinct way of seeing and
working. Color people, keep doing color, black and white people keep
doing black and white. Our unique selves are important. That is not to
say one should stay inside their comfort zone or inside a box,
experiment and GROW.

I love Baren for the depth of interesting discussion. I also think our
exchanges often push us in new directions and can be a challenge.

As they say "You pays your money and you takes your choice" Whatever
works for you.
("...unless you are someone like Albrecht Durer" ) someone said. We in
Baren have our contemporary Durers, John Center, one example.

Colour vs Black and White.
I lurk as I am not yet able to cut, print and share images with you Bareners. However I do read every post and I find the colour vs black and white discussion quite amusing yet very informative.
      My view as an artist is that there is no either or. Whether we’re talking about pigment or light these colours and values represent the full range of resources available to visual artists for us to express our creativity.
      The real issue is our ability to make the most effective choice for what we wish to convey to the viewer. In the final analysis that remains a personal artistic decision.
      I hope this contributes to the debate somewhat. Best wishes. ASW

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone here is using MDF as a tympan in an etching press
to do relief work with oil based inks i.e placing it over dampened paper
(instead of felt blankets)? And if so, should paper be placed between mdf
and roller or between the print and MDF? And would MDF work better than
Plexiglas as a tympan?

I read somewhere in Baren that people were using Masonite - will MDF work
the same as Masonite?

A few weeks ago I was using felt blankets and most of my problem with
embossing is now gone after dumping the felt - then I read that a few folks
here were using rubber printing blankets used in offset printing. I don't
have a printing blanket so before I ordered one from ebay I thought that a
self healing cutting mat would be about as close as I could get so I bought
one at one of the local stores here - I don't have the major embossing
problem I was having with felt after using the cutting mat, however I am
still getting a relatively noticeable line around some cut areas that I
want to eliminate...would the cutting mat be causing this problem? I was
thinking that a cutting mat would behave similiarly to a printing blankes so
not sure if I should order the print blanket now...

Subject: Another Week, Another 3 Colors

This is another shot of my current print in progress. There are 8 layers of color shown here, printed with a mostly uncarved block of plywood (just the little "stars" are carved). Now I'm carving more on the same block to create a design that will be overprinted. This is the second print in my series about money. The series is tentatively titled "Loaded."

I'm going to be taking a silkscreen workshop at Zea Mays Printmaking for the next 3 days so I won't be working on this print, but I'm excited to try another printmaking method. I can imagine silkscreen and woodblock being super compatible.

Subject: New Toys

We arrived home yesterday after a long, lovely trip. I'm not exactly ready to be back, but here we are :) A package that I had ordered was waiting for me when we got here: new toys!


This little guy came with my Flexcut tool set, which I've had for a few years now, and has been one of my most used tools. I have some projects in the works (big blocks!) that call for more detail and linework, so I decided to add to my set with some gouges in a range of small sizes.
