To the people signed up for the Japan Relief project, would you mind sending Barbara and Julio your address info off-list. Otherwise, because of the large number of posts, we will be triggering more than one digest per day. Also, other messages more important to the project might be missed over. It's okay to talk about the project, and we should, but something like address info affects only those directly keeping the lists.

Many thanks, folks.

Folks...read the baren sign up page... here:
http://www.barenforum.org/fundraiser_project/index.html
the theme is Inspired by Japan
the size is OBAN 10x15 inches or smaller if you have a problem working that
large...
We are on a real roll here with this fundraiser. Everyone is excited about
exhibiting and helping to sell the work.
Good job Baren

I am looking for a good/reliable/reasonably priced sharpening service
for my linocut tools located in the USA. I never was great at
sharpening, but now I am dealing with some eye issues I am hopeless. I
tried the local Woodcraft store but they did even a worse job than I.
Anyone have a suggestion?

Good Morning Baren

I have been chained to this computer with all the emails running back and
forth...here is one I wanted to share.

Guadalupe wants to buy a set of the prints for the collection of Prints for
Peace... how good is that? Our first sale...and the work is still in the
planning stages for most of us.
Wahoo!!!

I have been getting several emails about the size. The preferred size is 10x15,
or OBAN. If you absolutely cannot do this size, we still want your prints and
will just not worry about it. That being said, it would look great if they were
all the same size.

where do you live....in Marin county, for example, I know a sharpener,
actually a small business with six master sharpeners who do all the blades
for all the restaurants, paper cutters and other sharp knife users in the
Bay Area. they are all very serious master craftsmen and would surely be
able to put some nice edges on your tools and lead you to some stones and
techniques you could use. I bought an expensive German kitchen knife there a
few years ago and before letting me walk out the door the owner took me
upstairs and spent twenty minutes refining the edge with about five
different Japanese stones until it would cut tissue paper. those are the
kind of people you need to find.

Diane, Eli.........I think Kristine will be posting about #49 soon, there
was some discussion behind the scenes as to delaying #49 so as to allow
the group to focus on the Inspired by Japan project, I guess if there is
enough interest in keeping #49 on schedule we need to speak up and let
Kristine know...any thoughts ????ht

thanks.......Julio

What type of tool and where are you? Are they Japanese tools or speedball?
The wood store should be ashamed of themselves.... they should have been able to
do it, you got a bad person doing the work

More thoughts on pricing for the Tsunami prints

$50 for individual prints
$350 for a Portfolio of 10 prints (40 available)
This is a price of $35 each
$1000 for a portfolio of 30 prints, or $30 each (8 available)
$1600 for the entire double portfolio set of 65 prints or $25 each ( 2
available)

8 complete sets of 65 prints for display and exhibition with portfolios
If we sell some of the prints, we will just have less in the portfolios and drop
the price accordingly.
1 complete set with portfolio for the archive

1 set pre-sold for Prints for Peace.

The price for a complete set to participants is negotiable. We will have to set
this price but I think our own artists should get a real deal if they want the
whole thing. Maybe half price or $800. That would be $12.30 for each print

The Baren will absorb the cost of shipping the complete sets to venues for
display and if someone buys a complete set we can ship it to them if it is not
available at the exhibit.

I think it might be good to just out and out ask for donations at each exhibit
even if no one buys a print...every dollar will help the cause. A big jar with
dollars for Japan Tsunami Victims will do the trick...also telling everyone that
the money is going directly to Mercy Corps and that the artists have donated the
work and Dick Blick and the manufacturer donated the portfolios.

Let me know what you think of these prices...it is a little higher that Kale's
table. We have to establish this right away so we can do some promotion.

Did anyone volunteer to do a brochure for us??? Who has skills and could do
that? I can muddle it out but it is not my strength... we can do a pdf that can
be printed out in any country to help promote the exhibits and sales.

It might be that an exhibit raises funds and does not sell any work. That could
happen.

The only problem with selling individual prints is some might be more popular
than others and sell out right away...I guess if that happens we can go back to
the artist and beg for more prints. What a good problem to have!

I am liking these numbers.

Also to raise money at the Exhibitions we could have some representative prints made into postcards (it can be very reasonably) for donors and/or to sell. It's nice to walk away with something after you've given money.

I used to do graphic design before computers but after the letterpress. I don't have program to design, but I have a friend in the business if you get stuck with the brochure...

Julio, for myself, I would just as soon see the list up now, even if we put a
floating deadline that would be 90 days after the list has all 30 printers and
four or five alternatives, or is declared closed.

This might allow printers that want to do both exchanges enough breathing room
to finish the Japan exchange first without forgoing the 'regular' exchange.

If the coordinator were willing, we could also consider just going ahead and
send in our prints and return postage and simply wait for the deadline to evolve
and expire.

My 2 cents
Eli
