Rachael, Graham, Eli and Mike.
All your suggestions are very interesting I am impressed with them. What I would do is try them all in the
plywood that I have. I think the lighter print (the shellac plywood) I will use as a background.
I have not tried real wood. I will try these techniques on wood also.

Reliefs for Relief Juried Exhibition
I cannot get the other emails for the exhibitions working, so if you have any problem just email me directly
about Relefs for Relief, juried by Lyle Wiliams, Curator of Prints and Drawings at the McNay.

Subject: [Baren 43069] NHK re-broadcast
Send Message: To this poster

I just got a call a few minutes ago from a producer at NHK World
(their overseas service). They are trying to get back to 'normal'
schedules as the news cycle calms down, but haven't got regular
programming back in sync yet. He let me know that a 30-minute program
they previously aired on my work is up for re-broadcast tomorrow; they
are going to use it as a kind of 'filler', running it six times during
the day, in between the news bulletins. (The program is nothing to do
with earthquake stuff - it was produced last September)

It's in their Japanophiles series. It will be viewable on cable, or on
this page of their site:
http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/index.html

Their schedule page gives broadcast times for various locations around
the world. First broadcast seems to be:
17:30 on the 1st (US west coast time):
1:30 on the 2nd (London)
... and repeated five more times through the day.

Many of you have already seen this of course, as it has been stored on
my website here:
http://woodblock.com/press/woodblock_shimbun.php?storyid=tv45
But this is your chance to see it in large-screen HD (if you have a
cable TV package that includes NHK World ...)

Subject: Mystique Series #12 : printing steps 6 ~ 7
Posted by: Dave Bull

Despite what I wrote yesterday in the comments to the previous entry, I was able to get two impressions done today. It won't be until tomorrow morning that printer Tetsui-san will be coming over (we'll be spending the day on the work of sizing the paper for the ongoing senshafuda project for Mokuhankan).

So for now, here we go with the next two impressions on this Mystique print. First, just a small touch of red:

It's the next one that is now going to transform this print. Because the keyblock was only a partial outline, it has been difficult to tell what the objects look like. No longer!

Of course there's text on this print. I seem to be constitutionally incapable of making a print with no writing on it. I briefly considered carving all these words, but my shoulder and arm are hurting from working on the computer during last month's big commercial job fest, so I decided I couldn't face carving another block of text. I decided to hand letter instead, which is only slightly less taxing on my hand, but less taxing nonetheless. I bought a couple of brown chisel-tipped archival Prismacolor markers and set about doing it.

Subject: Mother Nature - Pastel Sketches
Posted by: Ellen Shipley

Pulled out the pastels to work on my Mother Nature block. The theme is Mother Nature welcoming our dog, Thor (because all dogs go to heaven).

I want to incorporate images of the moon and stars.  Back to the pastels.

Subject: Proofs
Posted by: Sue

The first proof. You can see the background/white areas need gouging a little lower to get rid of the spottyness where the ink roller has found bits not cut low enough.

The second proof, after more cutting and tidying up. Just a couple of little blips to shave off on one edge. I'd like to practice my lettering cutting some more, as I'm very picky. Also if I'm honest, I should have raised the composition up on the block so that the swash of the 'L' in Libris wasn't so close to the base, but as a first time it'll pass.

Subject: Progress is slow
Posted by: Sharri

It has been very quiet around here as the carver has been busy plying her trade with her  poor little arthritic fingers. (Play for sympathy, in case you missed it.) They (the fingers) seem to move a little slower each time a new block is started.  But, today was Proof Day.  I don't know how other woodblock people approach this by my feelings are a mixture of pure dread, and curiosity.  Therefore, I seem to breathe rather shallowly until that first proof has been pulled.  This time there was a great letting out of breath and normal breathing quickly followed.  It is not bad!  Here is a photo of the block - from which you can probably tell very little.  I had intended to show where I had to build the block back up because my line peeled right off with a mere brushing of a shirt sleeve.  I don't think that shows very well, so you will have to imagine that part.  It was done with wood epoxy pressed into the spot that needed repair and then carved again just like it was the original thing. McClain's sells this product and it can also be found at most home improvement stores.  It is like a miracle drug.  Fixes even the most egregious errors. (I imagine - since I have never, of course, had any of those egregious errors myself.)   :-/
