Living both north in a damp climate and south in a desert climate is
challenging as far as wood is concerned. With the damp climate in
Washington I have never had to worry about wood drying out. I am
working on myrtle wood, that is pretty oily and rarely splinters, in
my experience. However this small piece must have been sitting down
here a few years and it is cracking and splintering as I carve it. Do
any of you living in dry climates have any secrets about ow you care
for your wood? My husband suggested that I melt wax and coat the ends
to hold in the moisture. Certainly worth a try. Now that I have pieces
that have dried out is there anything I can do to return moisture to
the wood?

Maria I agree about language and culture. It is very different to just
learn a language in school versus living in the country that speaks
it. There are nuances and dialects that come with the region one lives
in. I know all of this affects art. I have found in my experience that
the warmer climates seem to be more into the arts than the colder
climates. Italy??? Yes, Mexico also treasures artists much more than
say our good old USA. Maybe when you don't have to worry about keeping
warm you have more time for smelling the flowers?

Great surprise waiting on my doorstep when I arrived home today! These prints are gorgeous. I can't wait until later this evening and I have more time to look each over more carefully. Thanks so much Maria for putting them together. The colophon looks great as well - I'm sure it had to be a lot of work. And thanks to all the participants.Andrea Starkeywww.starkeyart.comwww.starkeyart.blogspot.com

Alex you were sitting in the front row too - how funny is that! The woman on my right was scribbling notes as fast as she could so I told her (& another woman) about Baren - I hope they check us out.

You know other Baren members in Brisbane? Maybe we Australians should have a mini Baren Forum over here to coincide with the real one. I always feel so far away & left out of the fun *sulks* - anyone interested?

The thing that most fascinated me was that cloth covered block he kept wiping the pigments from the carved blocks with he wiped off blue pigment with it, then yellow pigment, then pink using the same dirty looking cloth and the colours didnt all turn to mud!!

Have you tried wetting the back of the block as well as the front to help prevent your block warping?

Subject: Of Course I'm Going to Japan
Posted by: Annie B

David Bull's Scroll Print, 2006

So many people have been asking me if I've canceled my trip to Japan in June for the Mokuhanga Conference. No! Absolutely not. I am SO going to Japan in June. First of all, the conference is in Kyoto, which is roughly 500 miles from the epicenter of the earthquake and maybe 450 miles from the Fukushima nuclear plant. Everything is fine in Kyoto.

And yes, I'm going to go to Tokyo first to meet my friend Mariko, who I will then be traveling to Kyoto with. And yes, Tokyo is much closer to all the earthquake and nuke plant action. But although that's the case, everything is OK in Tokyo, too. I'll be keeping track of the situation, of course, but I'm going to Japan.

Which brings me to David Bull, an extraordinary ex-pat Canadian ukiyo-e printmaker who lives in the greater Tokyo area. That's his work at the top of this page, one of my favorite pieces. Dave has written a beautiful and thoughtful piece about the situation in Japan from his perspective that I was really happy to read this morning. Thanks for posting your thoughts, Dave.

I can't wait to go to Japan. I can't wait to meet my moku hanga colleagues from all over the . . .
