Darn,
I just missed it....I took my sister to the airport and just got home at 6:30 AM
west coast time so think the next one is 10am....oh wait, we are still on
daylight savings time (it was very dark all the way to the airport and back and
raining buckets both ways) maybe it is 9am
I will see if I can make this work
my best

Congratulations! A wonderful feature, Dave!

I just watched it here Eastern Time Zone.

I'm going to watch it the two more times it airs today - for Eastern
Time at 1:10 pm and 6:10 pm.

David, sadly I miscalculated the time difference and missed your programme "Japanophiles". Is there any other opportunity to view this programme?Audley Sue Wing

Your wish is but mine to command!

A streamable copy will be living here (for a while, at least)

I had the pleasure of viewing this video twice. Thanks for providing the direct link.

I was wondering if the opening title sequence (using animated scenes from famous Japanese prints) was inspired by their knowledge that a woodblock printer (Dave) would be interviewed on the series; or if someone just 'happened' to come up with it. In either case, it seemed a very fitting and colorful opening for your program.

I thought everything went together well - with good interaction between you and Peter (Barakan) throughout the show. I was glad you were allowed to go into greater detail about your original inspiration for making prints; your struggles and triumphs throughout the years; and your vision for the future. I really enjoyed the time spent in the bakery (which we hear so much about) to finally meet those wonderful friends of yours. Very fun people!

I had some questions answered as well, including one I had previously had about the odd looking glass bulb hanging over your work-place. (BTW - its a water-filled round-bottomed lab flask with a light bulb placed nearby - and performs quite well as a light-diffuser - eliminating shadows on the woodblock). Great idea! Do many other Japanese carvers use one? I think one day I'll give it a try...

You did very well, Dave. Best presentation yet!

Keep climbing that mountain...

Use of those flasks here in Japan seems to date from around Meiji
time, although nobody knows for sure. I think it's almost certainly an
import from the west, where engravers used them long before that time.

Surprised me too! A lot of the film and photos they used must have
been dug out of their archives - stuff that they used for programs
years ago.

Did you see one place - at 16:40 - where I'm trying to cut a line of a
print, and the _bevel_ of my knife is pressed against the line! Must
have been taken sometime in the mid 1990s. Embarrassing now ...

But overall it was a good production I think, and there has been lots
of good feedback today. Thanks to all those who enjoyed it!

I would try to dilute it with a little vegetable oil then soak that up with
plenty of towels, pat and scrub lightly. Then after getting up as much as you
can I'd work in some liquid dish washing soap and try to scrub it out, working
the area with cloth towels.
Good luck!

Three today, although most of the work on the first one was done yesterday ...

And all three of these are kind of subtle, but do make the print a lot more attractive. First is a green/brown gradation around the top of the persimmon:

Then we switch to the other end of the fruit, for a bit of shading down there:

This next one will only be visible in the enlargement (if there) - it is a secondary tone that picks out many of the details of the insect:

(Once we're done, and I have time for it, I'll take a closeup scan of the insect, so we can see that better ...)

Three to go ...

Subject: Watch the NHK program here!
Posted by: Dave Bull

For the benefit of those who didn't get a chance to watch the recent NHK program on my work in the Japanophiles series, I'm putting a version of it here on the RoundTable.

At the moment of writing, I haven't received a good copy of the program from NHK, so this temporary version (videoed from my monitor, and cropped to a 4:3 ratio) will have to do for now. It's 30 minutes long, and will start to stream when you roll over it and press the 'play' button ...

Please use the comments below to let me know what you think about it!
