Subject: [Baren 41854] press wheel question
Send Message: To this poster

One for the press experts and budding mechanics:

I asked the Whelan folks about this but so far no answer so I thought I'd
try here.

I have a Whelan Pro model and am thinking about the wheel. It's really too
big and I never really grab the round "wheel" part as I am plenty strong to
rotate with the radii without problems and my "wing span" is comfortable
that way.

At 5'2" I can't even reach the top and it would be very handy to be able to
reach through the wheel to ink, place paper, etc. Not really possible with
the round part present but would be possible with a star-type wheel.

My question, would the wheel lose integrity if I customize it into a start
type wheel (I'm thinking hack-saw customizing)?

Anyone?

TIA yet again,

Maria

I think it would be fine to do so, maybe Whelan has one and will trade you, If
not get the hack saw! Actually I don't know how big a job that might be.
There is really no difference except for the ease of the operator, otherwise it
works exactly the same

Why not build a step or platform that allows you better access without hacking
your press? Otherwise, it might be best to have a star-wheel made up by a local
machine shop or welder, keeping the original intact for a future user.

Maria,
If the wheel is made out solid metal, you could cut it creating a star wheel. But if it is tubular (dude!) than its' integrity would suffer. Perhaps a smaller turning device before you hack away? I could come and help if you care.

Captain's wheels, Star wheels, even motor drive should be
interchangeable. See if Whelan will swap you a smaller one that fits.
Usually the Captain's wheel is the more expensive one. Also they may
have someone that wants to switch also. Do they have a forum on their
website or a classified section? Ya never know. Maybe check
Inkteraction a local printmaking dept at the local university or another
printmaking blog and see if anyone wants to upgrade before you do
something that you can't undo.

Mark Phillips

Subject: Sometimes I'm Married, 2010

Married10

A week ago Lynn and I celebrated our 6th wedding anniversary and today I did this year's installment of the print series I call Sometimes I'm Married. As I've explained each year, I think of these prints as a gradual reduction series examining the state of my marriage. I plan to revisit this print every year around our wedding anniversary until all the states are one color.

Married09
Last Year's Map

This year I re-carved both blocks. One of the little Hawaiian islands had chipped off on the gold block, and the dark blue block had to be re-done to fill Maine back in. I had removed Maine prematurely in 2009 because the state legislature had approved a gay marriage bill which was scheduled to be enacted in August of that year. Unfortunately a group of citizens organized in opposition to the law, got a question on the November ballot, and the law was voted down. Bye bye Maine.

I also changed New Jersey from a maybe to a not. Last year there was some indication that same sex marriages from outside New Jersey might be recognized there, but at this point only "civil unions" are recognized. Since "civil union" is a made-up thing that means something different in each state, I ignore it. This map is about . . .

Carved some more on the background block for the little octopus.
It's weird to carve away the image.  I'm not used to carving multiple blocks, so this is new territory.
