Conor, I didn't follow your long description question, but these are 2
things that work for me in general for small spaces:

I use Q tips to clean around edges and also the very small toothbrush, 1/4
inch Oral B, to fix small printed areas,
(My motto is Less Work for Mother and the well- known art KISS--- Keep It
Simple Stupid.)

Different strokes for different folks.
