The Impact printmaking conference in Bristol was great, and I had an opportunity to catch up with many moku hanga artists from around the world. I made a photo essay and posted it at picasaweb.google.com/aprilvollmer/IMPACT6SurimonoInternationalPortfolio#

The director of the Nagasawa Art Park program attended, and I was also able to meet Kari Laitanen and Tuula Moilanen, two of the three authors of "Woodblock Printmaking," an excellent text. It was great to feel part of an international group of printmakers. In 2011 Impact will meet in Australia.

There was much talk about the upcoming Philagraphica conference in Philadelphia, which will coincide with the Southern Graphics Council meeting next March. www.philagrafika.org/SGC-2010 That will be an exciting conference, and closer than England!

I was glad to return home to quiet New York, after all the activity in Bristol and London!

Best wishes to all,

April

Thanks for posting that, Terry. I Googled the Davidson Gallery and
found a treasure-trove of prints. I'll probably spend hours there
today off and on. And Karen Kunc's prints are beyond amazing.

What a wonderful set of prints! It's a joy to go through them!

Thank you for your lovely colophon and all of your work
gathering and mailing them, Joe! I'm so grateful that we can do
these exchanges, and we can't without people stepping up and
coordinating. ...And coordinating really is exciting! You
phrased it well, Joe!

And thank you all for participating in the exchange! The theme
"My Window" brought forward such terrific images and such
excellent printing! Good job!

The extra bonus of this exchange was getting to briefly meet
Joe! (We need to have a Chicago area Baren get together soon!)

BTW, I met John Center a couple of weeks ago in Evanston. It
was great to see him again! He continues to do beautiful
blocks, and will be having a show, perhaps this coming month, at
the Unicorn Cafe where he frequently does his carving. He had a
previous exhibit there while he was working on his magnificent
Haggadah! http://barenforum.org/activities/activity_frame.html
He isn't on line right now, so we haven't been hearing from
him. He continues to focus on very political printing. I was
glad to see him and catch up with him for awhile!

Thanks again, Joe and EX41 folks!

Oh, sorry, and thanks to Annie, too. :--)

I'm still over on that site, looking around. I'm so digging some of
those antique Mexican prints.

Send Message: To this poster

Hello all -

I hope the collective knowledge and experience here can help me out. I am
looking for an artist's residency program for printmakers, so one that
includes a studio space with a press. Large, small, US or non-US,
expensive, free - it doesn't matter. I just want to know about as many
opportunities as possible right now. Googling has been extremely
frustrating, so I'm going to the source. If I get a lot of responses, I will
compile a list and post it online. Please, if you know of anything in your
area, send me an email.

Thank you!

Jenn Schmitt

P.S. I am also looking for rental opportunities for a press in a studio in
Massachusetts or New England. So if you know of anything in that regard,
please send it along as well.

Kristine, I just read the information about sign-up for Exchange #43. I intend to sign up, and as a new member this will be my first exchange. Unfamiliar, until now, with your guidelines (have just taken a brief look at them), I need to know:

Residing in Connecticut, would I sign up at 7 PM EST to meet your 12 AM GMT starting time, or anytime after 12 AM EST?

Viza,
Congratulations on the lottery job. I can't wait to see what you come
up with. At the last Baren summit when we had the exhibition at North
Bank Gallery in Vancouver I had you pegged as a fresh and rising
star. It is always nice to see one's thoughts validated. You go, girl!

Cheers ~

I don't know if this artist has been mentioned here before. Her work
is amazing, and she only prints one of each! I'd love to see one up
close. From the description it seems they are white-line prints, but
thin lines on some of the prints are dark.... they must be large
prints and white lines around the darker lines.

Carole, I like these of Cressida Campbell. Why edition of only one?

Commissioned edition of one? Does anyone in Baren do this, too?

Reminds me of a shell collector of rare shells. When he heard of another
one of his thought to be one of a kind shells was for sale he bought it and
then smashed it, the idea being that it would make his the one and only and
the more precious.

yes these are very interesting. thanks for the link. i sounds like she
paints the whole thing then reconstitutes the watercolors just before
printing unlike what i have read about white line printing where one
section/color is painted and printed at a time before the watercolor has a
chance to dry. It also mentions that she uses several coats of paint before
misting with water and printing. viza

Aussi alert! Cresssida Campbell is Australian. A couple oo months ago, one of her images was donated to my local city art gallery. It was not a print, but a a hand painted block. Magnificent. I am about to leave for Melbourne, more details in a couple of days.Jenny
