A little update....This morning, the ink feels dry on the small test
prints I did last night. At midnight, they still felt wet, so I
layered them with some regular copy paper overnight.

I'm going to try some hand-coloring over them this afternoon, and
will let y'all know what happens.

BTW, stirring the inks for quite a long time did help a bit. But I'm
still not terribly satisfied with the darkness of the lines on the
paper after printing, and I tried five different kinds of papers.

Well said, Marilynn, and I agree. We can find our way in woodblock carving
and printing through trial and error. Style will be the way that best
works for us and then can be developed.
Without repeating what Marilynn said--different strokes for different
folks.

Hi Marilynn,

I've never tried reduction printing, but it's definitely on my list
to do soon. I discovered that the color prints I like best done by
other people are often reduction prints, maybe because of the way the
ink looks when layered. I'm not sure why I like them better; I just
do.

And if I can keep the colors straight, it would probably fit my
working style better, too.

Eager to try it!

Hello Everyone!

With the sign-up date for Exchange 43 fast approaching, it's time to announce the theme for the exchange. Thanks to all who commented both in the forum and off-list. The votes have been tallied and the theme will be Typography. There will be no special technique required for this exchange. To make things less complicated, we will focus on a technique when there is no theme attached to the exchange. (You should plan on seeing a 3-color reduction to show up in the coming year. ;o) )

Sign-ups for Exchange 43 will open Thursday, October 1, 2009 for all those not participating in Ex. 42. Remember that if you are participating in Exchange 42, you will have to wait for a week before signing up.

Watch for a reminder email next week!

Please clarify... It is my understanding, from past exchanges, that everyone may sign up on the same day but those who are participants in the previous exchange are put on a 'holding list' for one week. Then when the week is up, they are added to the main in the order they signed up.

McClains has a little blurb on these inks. From what I understand you
can add cobalt dryer to speed it up.

Thanks, Kris. I'll check it out.

I wouldn't mind waiting especially, but usually find out about swaps,
calls for work, etc. at the last minute.

Right now, I'm printing some Dia de los Muertos prints, and I can't
afford to wait weeks for those to dry.

I throw stuff in the oven on warm all the time. Open the windows
though. It only take a minute to dry them so keep an eye on them.
I've browned a few!

I'm at my Aunt's house in Austin, Mom was released from the hospital at 1 today. I am having a hard time with her keyboard!
I will be taking Mom home to San Antonio tomorrow, after actually getting a nights sleep.
Since I have had several requests to confirm and update about the San Antonio Summit, I am copying my reply to Carol to the forum list.

>Dear Carol,

>I do know Lyle, and the Asian curator at SAMA made a request to meet with me about the summit.
>I have already contacted the McNay, SAMuseum of Art, Library, the City of San Antonio Office of cultural Affairs, and other institutions.
>One reason I wanted to move the date to 2011, is that I had canceled what i started when I was told about the Nevada Conference. and that I had neglected to get an official council approval of the San Antonio one.
>
>Any way,
>When the Nevada Summit had to be cancelled, and I recontacted the City, I was told that 2011 would be the year of the Asian/Pacific Rim in San Antonio, and I might be able to get some city sponsorship of Woodblock exhibitions and talks.
>This is why I asked the Baren Council to approve/sanction the change of date, and asked for seed money from the non-profit Baren funds.
>Since they plan at least 2 years ahead, changing the date to June 2011 would help me plan exhibitions to go with the confernce (SEE the Thread to Council below)

>I am reluctant to follow up until the council gives me an official response to the earlier correspondence
